Designing user interface has special importance in Virtual Learning. Considerable portion of students' time is spent in attempting to learn system, work with present lists in user interface and so forth. Perhaps virtual education system has several computational powers, but it lacks adequate user interface. Then, using system would be difficult and user may encounter many confuses during the work and would be unsuccessful in reaching their goals. These are results of unfamiliarity with fundamental principles and in user interface design and disusing them in generating virtual learning systems. Thus, in any virtual learning system design, it is necessary to consider fundamental principles and rules of the user interface design in such system, and in this manner, in this research an adequate user interface is suggested for e-learning Environment in which has been evaluated with regard to these fundamental principles and rules. Evaluations have been done on this interface show its desirable ability to attract users' satisfaction.

"Designing User Interface (UI) has an important role in user satisfaction. Students working in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), experience great difficulties and encounter consumes most of their time attempting to learn an incomplete system design by inexperienced UI designers. The VLE system may contain analytical function and features with poor UI facility, Hence the effective use of the system is hampered causing interaction frustration. These are due to the lack of familiarity of the designing with the basic principles of UI designs in VLE environment. Because of that, identification and categorization of these principles play an important role in promoting VLE system with UI domain. In this paper, identifying and categorizing UI design principles in VLE are investigated and comparison is made between various commonly used virtual learning systems on the web. The outcome of the conducted comparison studies provides a suitable guideline for designers of such systems."
User interface (UI) is point of interaction between user and computer software. The success and failure of a software application depends on User Interface Design (UID). Possibility of using a software, easily using and learning are issues influenced by UID. The UI is significant in designing of educational software (e-Learning). Principles and concepts of learning should be considered in addition to UID principles in UID for e-learning. In this regard, to specify the logical relationship between education, learning, UID and multimedia at first we readdress the issues raised in previous studies. It is followed by examining the principle concepts of e-learning and UID. Then, we will see how UID contributes to e-learning through the educational software built by authors. Also we show the way of using UI to improve learning and motivating the learners and to improve the time efficiency of using e-learning software.

A recent powerful idea in the design of Web-based learning environments is the usage of virtual places. The employment of interface metaphors is one of the approaches enabling inexperienced users to feel comfortable in such virtual environments. We have designed a Virtual Environment for Distance Education and Training (VEDET), which provides basic virtual spaces, resources, and services.
Usability seems to be an important factor in designing usable educational website. Ignorance to this factor might lead the user to an irrelevant path in performing the learning task. Cato (2001, p.3) defined usable as “being able to do the things you want to, not the things you have to”. Due to widespread global usage of the Internet in teaching and learning, teacher and learners tend to use it as a primary resource, hence, their interaction anywhere, anytime which are dynamic need to be evaluated. The purpose of interaction is to provide an efficient delivery system to the learners. This paper intends to examine the user’s perception on effectiveness of screen design in Virtual Learning System provided in Classnetwork.net. In order to determine the weaknesses in the screen design in Classnetwork the designers need to evaluate the prototype based on the users’ point of view. A total of 69 teacher education students were involved in this study. A questionnaire was administered to these students. The questionnaire sought to solicit 4-point scale on usability study for virtual learning system in Classnetwork. The data collected reports on the study of the effectiveness of the screen design between students and content in the virtual environment based on a guideline given by Nielsen (1993), Schneiderman (1992) and ISO 9241.

Today, when an enormous number of computer-based systems exist, the human activities are being computer mediated. Usually, in designing the interface to those systems, the human-computer interaction is left behind without consideration. In this paper, a literature in human-computer interaction is to be reviewed and the technology aspect of human computer interaction is to be analyzed. Also, general design principles are to be reviewed. According to all these issues, recommendations to designing a good human-computer interface for e-learning programming environment are going to be analyzed and proposed.
Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Computing Education Research - Koli '08, 2008
This volume is the culmination of more than a year of planning and effort on the part of both the local organising committee and the conference chairs. However, we were not working alone. Without an active community of researchers doing quality research and writing papers, a conference like Koli has no function or purpose. Consequently, a large part of the success of Koli Calling lies in its vibrant research community. It is your submissions that have made it possible for us to select this year's crop of interesting and thought provoking contributions.

As of March 2020, educational processes have undergone a significant transformation by moving to massive and almost exclusive use. The effects of this change have manifested themselves in the school setting, in university education, and in vocational training. All educational agencies have had to adapt very quickly to these new paradigms, to remain at the side of the students and to continue their educational activities, using new computer tools and virtual learning environments towards which, in the past, there was a lot of resistance. All teachers have had a double task: to carry out the educational program in the best possible way and above all to continue to maintain a human relationship with their students. The development and wide diffusion of ICT and communication have brought to light the need to develop new interfaces of online platforms. These trends pose a challenge to all people working with educational technologies. The role of the user interface (GUI) in e-learning is ...
The nature of computer based learning and instructional environments that support it have changed dramatically in the last decade. The growth of hypertext, hypermedia and multimedia provided the capabilities necessary for developing complex learning environments. The system described in this paper is being developed to be used in Personal Computer workstations with multimedia and network capabilities and is intended to be used in small or medium learning scenarios. The tools developed span several topics, from navigation trough desktop reality, hypermedia tools for editing and playing learning material and cooperative asynchronous and synchronous tools.
The students' success in learning not only affected by their skills, but there is also a number of important relative factors, like learning environment, teachers' instructional methods and course materials. These days with the advanced technology, computer systems have been used widely for educational purpose. Computer-based learning systems are beneficial for learning second language because the teachers can easily transfer different language skills to the learners. In language training not only the learners, but also the learning environment needs to be considered as well-prepared learning environment can motivate the students in learning. The user interface is the only bridge between the learners and the computer learning systems. Thus, design usable and easy undetectable user interface is very important for the computer-based learning systems.

Virtual reality has been successful used in real estate, urban planning and video games etc. In this paper, we proposed to build an interactive virtual e-learning environment using virtual reality technologies. With the help of multi-modal user interface, students can control their avatars to interactively communicate with virtual teachers and environment. This interactive e-learning environment can increase the autonomy of students and enhance students' interest in learning.
The gap between theory and practice in the studies of the effectiveness of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) seems to be neglected by most educators in creating interface design that is said to be very useful as a medium of delivering content to the students. Interface is one of the most important factors in delivering hypermedia learning products. It has to be carefully designed based on relevant theories. This paper intends to investigate the importance of HCI theory in designing interface design for hypermedia product as perceived by science and mathematic teachers in Universiti Brunei Darussalam. It will report on the study of interface design element based on Gestalt Law of Screen Design and Usability Attribute (Nielsen, 1993). This study also intends to look for an indicator for designing a good interface and to design a basic standard that can meet the learners' needs particularly in science subject. Data was collected from students of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam using the usability study technique.

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) are online learning systems that are used to enhance a student's learning experience by providing a set of teaching, learning and communication tools. The current VLEs, however, are not fully utilised or exploited to support effective collaborative learning. This paper investigates how to build effective online collaborative virtual learning environments, by exploring the requirements of VLEs from personal users. A prototype is then created to show how the designs of current VLEs can be improved to provide the essential functionalities and ease of use.

This paper analyzes several features of virtual learning environments. These tools are basic for new models of education because their basic idea is to reduce the number of hours face-to-face in the classroom and to promote remote individual work. This is the main purpose of the new European models given by the Bologna process. Four studies have been made. First of them, shows level of popularity of each environment according number of entrances in two web searchers. From this previous study, we have chosen the most popular environments and we will give the details of their features and main differences between them. We are going analyze existing environments to create online learning communities and so, promoting online learning. Next, we will show a study this type of educational social software. This study involves a questionnaire to some lecturers of our university, Polytechnic University of Valencia. Our analysis presents most important results. Then, we have studied the virtual learning environments used in the Spanish universities. It will show us which of them are more used in Spain. Finally in the last part of the paper, we will show a performance evaluation of the two main environments.

This chapter discusses the problems of electronic educational resources quality in terms of modern professional competencies shaping in E-Learning Environment. The importance of these problems due to the fact that modern society requires specialists who are not only professionally trained, but also use the "long life learning" strategy in professional self-development. Therefore, electronic resources should provide not only learning conditions for required knowledge and skills, but also have potential for customized information learning strategies generation, for planning personal achievements, self-development and self-realization. There are different evaluation procedures for digital educational resources quality inclusive two main aspects: technical specifications and instructional design. It is proposed to take into account in the evaluation system additional aspect (scorecard), which characterizes the personalization of student's educational activities, organized on the basis of electronic resources interaction. This set includes indicators of electronic educational resources quality, reflecting their ability to promote personal significant results, measured from the perspective of motivation, implementation of personal cognitive (education) requirements, disclosure of creativity and self-actualization. Conventionally, this group can be called "personalization indicators". Adaptation of such indicators group improves the quality of electronic educational resources by increasing the multiplicity and flexibility of their use in different educational contexts, taking into account the results of student's productive information activity and the diverse of their educational and informational needs and preferences.
