Al-Qur"an and hadis are as Islamic Law resources and there is no differences in terms of masdar al-Ahkam al-Syarī"ah al-Islamiyah. But, there will be different opinions and understanding with respect to Islamic thought. Such differences can be found within historical Islamic thought during human life. One example is about polygamy in which raises question based on both from al-Qur"an and hadis. Muslim Intellectuals and scholars including classical and Contemporary Muslim scholars and contemporary Indonesian Muslim scholars have various perceptions on polygamy.

Penulis berusaha untuk menjawab pertanyaan besar tersebut dengan mengkaji poligami dari berbagai perspektif dengan library research sebagai basis penelitiannya yang dikelola dengan paradigma integrasi–interkoneksi-multidisipliner. Hasilnya adalah bahwa boleh tidaknya berpoligami bergantung dari perspektif mana kita melihat. Dengan demikian, setidaknya kajian ini memberikan semacam pegangan bagi para pemerhati studi tentang poligami.

Tahun 2018 layak dijuluki sebagai tahun polemik, satu masalah dengan lainnya silih berganti, hilangnya satu polemik karena munculnya polemik baru. Dan polemik terbaru adalah munculnya ide dan gagasan salah satu partai anyar untuk mengilegalkan syariat poligami, bahkan Komnas Perempuan pernah 'membajak' otoritas Tuhan dengan mengatakan bahwa poligami bukan ajaran Islam. Tulisan ini akan memotret lebih tajam terkait masalah poligami, baik dalam perspektif syariat Islam, hukum positif, dan aplikasi poligami dari tokoh nasional hingga ulama Bugis. Poligami berasal dari bahasa Yunani "polygamie", yaitu poly bermakna 'banyak' dan gamie 'berarti laki-laki'. Secara istilah poligami adalah laki-laki yang beristri lebih dari satu orang wanita dalam satu ikatan perkawinan. Laksana seorang suami mungkin mempunyai dua istri atau lebih pada saat yang sama. Banyak wanita atau mungkin mayoritas yang menolak terjadinya poligami dalam keluarganya dengan berbagai alasan yang diupayakan. Namun terdapat pula beberapa wanita yang menerima konsep poligami dalam keluarganya. Banyak pula contoh perilaku nyata poligami yang didukung oleh istri, seperti memilihkan calon istri atau bahkan istri pertama yang meminangkan wanita lain untuk suaminya. Di Indonesia pernah ada acara yang cukup menyita perhatian publik "Poligami Award", ada pula ungkapan popular dari pemilik restoran berjaring "Wong Solo", Banyak istri, kaya raya, masuk surga! Syariat poligami dapat diterima karena kefahaman mereka terhadap bahaya bertambahnya jumlah wanita yang menua, tapi belum menikah, serta dampak negatif yang ditimbulkannya terhadap kehidupan masyarakat atau rasa tanggung jawab wanita, cintanya terhadap saudari-saudarinya dari kalangan perawan tua dan janda bahkan meningkatnya taraf ekonomi suami di antara perkara yang membuatnya tenang, (Jurnal Privat Law Vol. III No 2 Juli-Desember 2015).

The discourse of polygamy is a discourse that is always hotly discussed. This is because this is a very sensitive issue and is in direct contact with people from various circles, both academics and grassroots communities. The debate surrounding the legality of the practice of polygamy has never found agreement. Various methods and approaches are proposed to look at the actual law of polygamy, ranging from hermeneutics, maqasid al-shariah, to contextual approaches.. However, there are still no academics who try to capture the chronological series of polygamy practices from pre-Islamic times to the presence of Islam and dialogue polygamy verses with jahiliah traditions. Departing from this, this research seeks to reorganize QS. An-Nisa' [4]: 3 by using a synchronic-diachronic approach. This research uses a qualitative method and produces two points of conclusion, 1). The chronology of the polygamy verse begins when Islam dialogues with issues of gender equality in the climate of ignorance, and polygamy is one of the ignorant traditions that is not abrogated and only given regulation, 2). Synchronically, the background of polygamy restrictions is caused by the economic insecurity of men who cause new problems for others. (taking the property of orphans who are cared for to be given to their wives as maintenance). In addition, in the records of the books of hadith, psychologically, the Prophet hoped to have a people of his own. Forbidding polygamy is like closing the door on the Prophet's hopes.
