Green Chemistry, 2011
European Journal of Sustainable Development Research
Sustainable or green Chemistry has been identified as a crucial ingredient for sustainable development due to the vast array of chemical materials and processes that are utilized in the production of goods and services. This study reviews the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development in the context of sustainable chemistry and outlines its principles and benefits while presenting eco-innovation as an important approach to sustainability. The status of African countries in the eco-innovation movement is not encouraging and the continent is largely left out in this endeavour due factors like poor implementation and or domestication of existing eco-innovation policies; lack of eco-innovation policies and indigenous eco-innovations mentality. Areas for the application of sustainable chemistry principles and driving eco-innovations in Africa are highlighted and inherent challenges are analyzed.
Frontiers in Chemistry
Editorial on the Research Topic 15 years of the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC) This Research Topic of Frontiers in Chemistry is produced to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC). Established on the 23rd of February 2006, FASC was set up to promote the advancement of chemical sciences and the practice of chemistry that could be instrumental to the fulfillment of the development aspiration and objective of the people in Africa. In order to achieve the above aim, FASC set up the following objectives:

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, provided the fundamental principles (Rio Declaration) and the program of action (Agenda 21) for achieving sustainable development. Sustainable chemistry is understood as the contribution of chemistry to the implementation of the Rio Declaration and Agenda 21.

Science performed medicinal unrest until approximately the middle of 20th century in which medicines and anti contamination dealers had been found. Green chemistry can strengthen environmental sustainability via way of means of informing the layout of molecules, production processes, and merchandise in approaches that preserve resources, use much less energy, do away with pollution, and shield human health. Progress in human health is intently linked to the country of the herbal environment, and vice versa. The world`s sustenance deliver likewise elevated vastly due to the disclosure of 1/2 of and 1/2 of assortments, stepped forward strategies for cultivating, higher seeds and usage of computer virus sprays, herbicides and manures. The private delight on this planet grew to become out to be hugely stepped forward due to the disclosure of colors, plastics, splendor care merchandise and special materials. Before long, the evil influences of technology likewise wound up articulated, essential amongst them being the infection of land, water and environment. This is precipitated essentially due to the influences of

This review focuses on the environmental pollutants and contaminants of emerging concern in Africa. There is increasing reports and identification of ecotoxicological impact of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as plastic, pharmaceutical products, modern pesticides, and personal care products, in terrestrial and aquatic environment within Africa. Identification of CECs, including pharmaceuticals, plastic wastes, pesticide residues, fungal toxins, and personal care products, have been documented in African region including in sediments, sludge, treated drinking water, surface water, wastewater, groundwater, land, solid deposits, etc. Some of the emerging pollutants of concern to environment and humans include lindane, heptachlor, endrin, endosulfan, dieldrin, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), benzaldehyde, aldrin, bisphenol A, phthalates, bisphenol S, etc. There is need for more studies to identify and quantify the existing and more emerging pollutants.

The African Network for Chemical Analysis of Pesticides and other pollutants (ANCAP) is a legally registered non-governmental, non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making scientific body devoted to study, promote and develop the science of all aspects of chemical analysis of pesticides and other pollutants, including residues, degradation and environmental fate with the overall goal of safeguarding public health and the environment, ensuring safety of African agricultural and aquatic products in order to make them competitive in the world market, thereby significantly contributing to the continent’s poverty eradication endeavours. The overall objective is to increase the contribution by ANCAP in research and higher education in basic sciences to sectors important for local and global development. In 2019, on objective one, nine students from member countries were supported by ANCAP to attend ANCAP symposium. Also, a record 54 out of the targeted 57 were published mainly in th...

The International Conference on Pure and Applied Chemistry (ICPAC 2010) was held from 26th to 30th July 2010 at La Plantation Resort and Spa, Balaclava, in Mauritius. The theme of the conference was "Chemistry for Sustainable Development". ICPAC 2010 was attended by about 160 participants coming from 30 countries. The conference featured 100 oral and 85 poster presentations. The participants of ICPAC 2010 were invited to submit full papers. The latter were subsequently peer reviewed and the selected papers are collected in this volume. This book of proceedings encloses 31 presentations covering wide ranging topics from organic chemistry to material science and nanotechnology, and from computational chemistry to agricultural chemistry. We would like to thank all those who submitted the full papers and the reviewers for their timely help in assessing these papers for publication. We would like to pay a special tribute to all the sponsors of ICPAC 2010. Chemistry is being increasingly recognised as a central discipline that encompasses several areas of medicine, agriculture, biology, environment, physics and material science. Therefore, as we celebrate the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) and the 100th anniversary of the Noble prize awarded to Marie Curie, we hope that this collection of papers will serve as a useful reference set for researchers.

The continent of Africa is made up by many country borderlines, but as we know, borders are only lines on a map. Nature and the environment don’t recognize these borders, and therefore, issues of climate change, air pollution, water quality and diseases require collaborations among nations for their solutions. A new way of thinking, teaching and learning chemistry is also required. Chemistry will play a major role in solving the challenges that face our planet and the development of the continent of Africa. We must have chemists who will be able to solve these problems. In order to have these types of chemists, we must have, in the pipeline, students who will become the future chemists able to offer solutions to existing and new problems. This means developing a new curriculum and new methods of teaching chemistry so that chemistry can be accessible to all students in Africa. Sadly enough, many students shy away from chemistry. In order to attract students to chemistry, creative met...

Natural products ‘historically’ and ‘today’ have vast importance. This article describes the course ‘Natural Product Chemistry’, a new course in the 2011/2012 academic year in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences at St. John’s University of Tanzania. It reveals how the course has been applied to the African and Tanzanian context and expresses the importance of a ‘Natural Product Chemistry’ course within chemical education. This paper also serves as a resource to help other scientists develop a similar course within their context.

In this essay some important forerunners of green chemistry will be discussed and compared with the present state. The relationship to ethics will be considered. Starting from the new movement of green chemistry by Anastas, some important highlights will be presented. The new activities of IUPAC and other institutions on the concepts of metrics for green syntheses will be discussed. The prime importance of the inclusion of developing African countries into the concepts will also be covered. Green chemistry philosophy has become part of sustainable chemistry which emphasizes the implementation of the concept of sustainability in the production and use of chemicals and chemical products for sustainable development and, some sustainable development concepts are included under the section on Africa.
