Ethnomathematics uses the etymology of three Greek roots, ethno, mathema, and tics. It is a program that incorporates mathematical ideas and procedures practiced by the members of distinct cultural groups, which are identified not only as indigenous societies but as groups of workers, professional classes, and groups of children of a certain age group as well (D’Ambrosio 1985). This program is concerned with the motives by which members of specific cultures (ethno) developed, over history, the measuring, calculating, inferring, comparing, and classifying techniques and ideas (tics) that allow them to model natural and social environments and contexts in order to explain and understand these phenomena (mathema). In order to understand the development of ethnomathematics as a program, it is necessary to discuss its current and future perspectives as well as to analyze its goals, objectives, and assumptions regarding the encouragement of the ethics of respect, solidarity, and cooperati...
This issue of the Revista Latinoamericana de Etnomatemática (RLE, Latin American Journal of Ethnomathematics) serves as evidence of the extensive work carried out by researchers around the globe that contributes to the continually growing field of Ethnomathematics and its applications. While Ethnomathematics has a long tradition of scholarship and presence within Latin America, this shared endeavor is a dynamic and diverse effort constantly informed by conversations with the community of practice at large. In this way, we can consider this publication a snapshot of the connections, conversations, efforts, and initiatives that our membership and readership continually maintain, across many language, disciplinary, and institutional divides. This issue is also indicative of the diversity of Ethnomathematics. The featured contributions represent all languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and English) and genres (articles of investigation, reflections, literary reviews, and interviews) currently supported by the journal. The contributing authors have positioned their work in relation to a wide range of geographic contexts (including Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the United States), demographics (Mapuche, Arhuaco, Kanamari, Mixtec, Guarani-Ñandeva, community leaders, students, low-income populations, teachers, women artisans, farmers, researchers), and pedagogical settings (indigenous schools, elementary schools, high schools, one-room schools, the workplace, the home, the community) and have employed diverse methodologies and theoretical frameworks in their research design and conclusions.

The branch of ethnomusicology commonly referred to as "applied ethnomusicology" has received comparatively little attention within the university setting. The relative lack of academic debate surrounding research and representation activities labeled "applied" does not, however, denote a paucity of such activity. Nor does it reflect an absence of interest in the subject. The dearth of discussion does reveal, however, long-held tensions between "pure" and "practical" scholarship and ingrained prejudices against matters perceived as atheoretical. These tensions and prejudices have decreased significantly in recent years but nevertheless remain present across the discipline. Arguably more relevant today, the positioning of applied ethnomusicology off to the side of more dominant discourses hints at some of the typical job parameters and work-related stresses faced by "applied" ethnomusicologists, which have tended to limit publications; this, in turn, has limited broader considerations of the subject.

If the study of Jesse Fewkes and Frances Densmore in the late 19th century is taken into account, western Applied Ethnomusicology is entering its second century. After more than one hundred years of development, Applied Ethnomusicology has basically become a relatively mature research path in the West, which not only provides scholars with a new research perspective but also enriches the subject connotation of Ethnomusicology to a certain extent with its research philosophy and value pursuit. In China, Applied Ethnomusicology has attracted more and more attention. Therefore, reviewing the development history of the discipline is not only conducive to clarifying the development context of the discipline but also conducive to reflecting on the current problems and better grasping the development trend of the discipline. In the first part of this paper, the factors influencing the birth and development of applied ethnomusicology are further discussed from within and outside the discipl...
