Handball is a fast, dynamic sport and the role of the goalkeeper is especially exposed. However, little attention is paid in science to the development of the goalkeeper. This research is focused on the psychological characteristics of handball goalkeepers, specifically with regard to aggression, anxiety, reaction times, fluid intelligence and concentration. More and less successful goalkeepers were compared in these characteristics. Forty-six participants were included-23 of them were more successful and 23 less successful, according to an expert evaluation. The more successful goalkeepers were also significantly older. The data was collected in 2010 and 2011. The instruments used were Buss-Durkee Aggression Questionnaire, Spielberger's Anxiety Inventory (STAIX-1 and 2), the Test of Series for measuring fluid intelligence, the Test of Attention for measuring concentration, and the CRD Series for measuring reaction times. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare ...

The general development of the sports world has guided researchers in sports science to study excellence in sports performance, namely, the study of the characteristics and requirements specific to each sport. However, in order to meet these requirements, each individual must have a set of specific characteristics similar to those of the group to which he/she belongs. The variables in the study are related to the psychomotor abilities and psychological aspects that could influence the overall performance of junior III handball players. The main work instruments are related to field testing and psychological characteristics measurement. For psychomotor abilities, we used means such as the TReactionCo software (eye–hand coordination), Just Jump platform (dynamic balance), Tractronix system (general dynamic coordination), and Illinois test (spatial-temporal orientation), and for the psychological characteristics, we used the Motivational Persistence Questionnaire. In addition, the resu...

In this study, mental toughness and anxiety have been chosen to be compared between male American football and handball players. The present study was carried out to determine and examine the psychological parameters mentioned above and show the importance of these concepts in the process of sport career. Mental toughness (with its sub-dimensions) and anxiety levels of 44 male participants were determined. Twenty-seven of those participants were American football players between 19 and 25 years of age (mean ± s: age 20.93 ± 2.25 years). Their sports experience ranged between 1 and 19 years (mean ± s: 10.26 ± 3.34 years). The remaining seventeen participants were handball players between 18 and 26 years of age (mean ± s: age 21.54 ± 3.31 years). Their sport experience ranged between 5 and 12 years (mean ± s: 9.15 ± 4.13 years). Differences between the groups were determined using the "Independent Sample t-test" analysis method using the SPSS 21.0 software. The independent sample t-test results showed that there were significant differences in the total mental toughness (including its sub-dimensions; confidence, constancy and control) and anxiety levels of the two group of players (p < .05). The American football team players' confidence, control, and total mental toughness levels were higher than that of handball players and they had lower level scores for constancy and anxiety levels.

The research was conducted on a sample of 180 handball players classified into 3 subsamples of 60 athletes who are competing in I, II and republic handball Serbian league, with the application of 15 variables (3 cognitive and 12 conative). The aim was to estimate if there are significant differences between athletes from different competition levels. Data processing was conducted using canonical discriminative analysis, and the results showed that statistically significant difference exist between handball players from different competition levels in all systems (multivariate) estimated by cognitive and conative variables. In cognitive area 91.73% of the significant interclass differences between I league handball players and handball players from other two levels of competition were estimated by efficiency parallel area S1 test. In cognitive area, the correlations were 0.58 and 0.31, which is 82.82% and 17.11% of variance. In the I league handball players, from all measured parametres, there were only phatological symptoms which refer to depression, hypersensitivity and paranoia, which could be a consequence of greater engagement of cognitive processes and the fear of not fulfilling the expectations set before them, and the complexity of the task, and whether they will continue to pursue their career with even greater success, which is contrary to the results obtained in athletes of the lower ranking, where the pathological concurrent factors are present to a larger extent, indicating a very high level of their somatic anxiety and a higher loading of defense mechanisms and regulators of organic functions.

The aim of this study was to know psychological characteristics of young elite female handball players using the C.P.R.D. questionnaire, and to establish possible differences based on years competing. The obtained results show that these young female handball players have similar psychological characteristics to other sports players. Players with more year of competitive experience showed higher scores in different psychological skills assessed. Nevertheless, only significant differences were found between more experienced players and less experienced players (years competing) in mental skills scale (p≤ 0,05).
Problem statement: The aim of this study was to examine the blood biochemical and physiological changes that occur during competitions in elite handball players-men in a specific kind of anxiety state. The grounding, elaboration, verification and evaluation of a scientific concept based on psychological, physiological and biochemical guidance of the effort in competitive handball in order to generalize it at national level, imply the following: Establishing if and in which measure, the stress factors that act upon handball players during the official competition influence the modification dynamics of certain physiological factors being in direct correlation with effort capacity and focusing on the capacity of influencing, controlling and directing the stress factors in the sense of obtaining certain physiological parameters values necessary for a great performance. The research has emphasized the fact that this method of studying the factors that intervene in obtaining performances in handball is not yet applied on a national level, this aspect not being a priority for the specialty federation representatives, although this kind of collaboration with specialists from other fundamental areas, associated with competitive sports, has given worldwide remarkable results in other sports. Approach: The selected subjects for the experiment were male handball players in the Internal Championship-Romanian National League-male. Our experiment focused on each team's ten most valuable players (The first seven title players and the first three most valuable reserves), resulting 50 subjects from the male teams. The selection criterion was number of times they played as title players in the Romanian Championship games, their participation in centralized training sessions with the Romanian representative teams, as well as their play in the Romanian National Team. Blood samples were drawn 3 min after finishing the match in order to determine pH, oxygen partial Pressure (P O2), carbon dioxide partial pressure (PCO 2), concentration of Hydrogen Carbonate (HCO 3-), Base Excess (BE), Standard Base Excess (SBE), Standard Bicarbonate (SBC), Lactic Acid (LA) and relation SBC/HCO 3-(R). Conclusion/Recommendations: After match all parameters studied changed their value significantly (p<0.001) in all teams. These results demonstrate that handball demanding in a highly aerobic with a considerable anaerobic component (as in official competition) requiring high lactate tolerance. Training programmed should reflect these demands placed on players during competitive match-play. The purpose of this study was accomplished, confirming some of theories in the sportive from a psychological point of view of approaching the sportive competitions. Data can represent a starting point in thorough study of the handball coaching principles.

Background. Playing sports entails numerous forms of stress that athletes need to be able to manage in order to deliver the desired performance. It is also important that they release any accumulated tension in a way that would enable them to be more assertive. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 147 athletes (age 13.93±1.22). The validated Hungarian version of the Buss-Perry (1992) Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children were utilized in the research (STAI-C). The statistical analyses were examined through SPSS 24.0. software, where values p≤0.05 were considered significant. Results. Trait aggression had a positive correlation with state anxiety (r=0.17; p=0.04) and trait anxiety as well (r=0.17; p≤0.01). A positive correlation has been found between verbal aggression and trait anxiety (r=0.19; p=0.03), and state anxiety (r=0.17; p=0.44). A positive correlation can also be found between physical aggression and trait (r=0.28; p≤0.01) and state anxiety (r=0.16; p<0.05). Trait anxiety has been found higher in female athletes (33.47±7.01) than in males (29.75±5.81)(t=-3.24; p=0.04). Conclusions. Based on the results, it was found that there is a strong correlation between anxiety and aggression. Thus, as it is crucial for everyday people to have appropriate coping skills, it would be also important for athletes.
ABSTRACT The sport competition is considered the main place where the player physical, physiological, technical, skillful, psychological ability is showed, and also his readiness to achieve the winning in a contest ruled by the game rules and often these sport competitions characterized with the appearance of the high nervous tension and anger that reflect on the players, as the physiological and physical readiness are considered as a main two circles of the good player preparation series, and both of these series affect the one another negatively and positively. The preparing of the player for a high level on the psychological, physical, physiological arena, create a case of the physical stability and self and movement control, later it create heavy desire and the high readiness to join the contest and overtake the difficulties that the players can face, and the physical case can be affect the psychological case and vice versa under the normal circumstances for a adapted stable personality, these two researchers used the Premier League handball players that their number is (64) player so the research sample formed percentage of 33,33%. From the community ratio and they used a psycho-physiological and skillful tests for the handball and the relation between them, and the researchers reached a moral relation between skill and the psychophysiological variables. The aim of the current study is to determine how the level of state and trait anxiety differs between youth athletes of different performance levels and furthermore whether there are correlations between performance levels and psychomotor variables in the selected tasks. A sample of 97 boys, aged 11-12 years, practising soccer represented two groups: A-high performance level and Blower performance level. Participants completed a state and trait anxiety inventory and performed selected psychomotor tests. The analyses demonstrated that the higher the levels of anxiety were, the shorter was the response time and more accurate were the responses in selected psychomotor tests. For the whole group, r =-0.224, p < 0.05, and for group B, r =-0.333, p < 0.05. Moreover, the findings showed a moderator effect of level (group A vs B) on reaction time, which was almost significant in state anxiety and significant in trait anxiety. For group B, trait anxiety was negatively related to reaction time (b =-0.002, SE = 0.001, t =-2.93, p = .004, 95% CI [-0.004,-0.001]). This means that the higher the trait anxiety was, the shorter was the reaction time in group B, but there was no significant effect in group A. The results of the study confirmed the negative correlation between the trait and state anxiety and reaction time. The higher the anxiety was, the shorter was the response time of child soccer players. Future research should determine whether athletes' performance levels do affect performance under stress and replicate the study with different samples such as girls and different sport disciplines.
