Abstract

The production and dissemination of knowledge is not just constantly increasing since the invention of printing but it is also subjected to incessant change. In order not to get lost in the huge amount of information, scientific comunication soon resorted to the means of text shortening. Thus, long constructions can be organized and formed into manageable elements and new scientific findings can be spread more efficiently and quickly (this is also connected to the origin of the first scientific journal, Journal des Savans, 1665). This concentration of information leads to a more concise procuration of research results but not necessarily to a decrease of research literature. Nowadays, scientists have to cope with a growing amount of relevant literature in order to keep themselves updated in their special field.
