The regularity of a non-Newtonian flow in a domain with a boundary cannot be treated easily because of the nonlinear viscosity term and the global property of the pressure. A distance function was used in a previous study to obtain a strong solution. In the present study, using the distance function idea, we obtain Serrin-type regularity criteria for the vorticity and the velocity with regard to non-Newtonian equations with shear-dependent viscosity in a bounded domain.

In this paper, the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, affected by time-varying Wiener phase noise is investigated. Tight upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel are developed. The upper bound is obtained by using the duality approach, and considering a specific distribution over the output of the channel. In order to lower-bound the capacity, first a family of capacity-achieving input distributions is found by solving a functional optimization of the channel mutual information. Then, lower bounds on the capacity are obtained by drawing samples from the proposed distributions through Monte-Carlo simulations. The proposed capacity-achieving input distributions are circularly symmetric, non-Gaussian, and the input amplitudes are correlated over time. The evaluated capacity bounds are tight for a wide range of signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) values, and thus they can be used to quantify the capacity. Specifically, the bounds follow the well-known AWGN capacity curve at low SNR, while at high SNR, they coincide with the high-SNR capacity result available in the literature for the phase noise channel.

The purpose of this paper is to study how the geometry and the spatial distribution of energy fluctuations of different length scales in a spiral vortex layer are related to each other in a time-dependent way. The numerical solution of Krasny [J. Comput. Phys. 65, 292 (1986)], corresponding to the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, is analyzed in order to determine some geometrical features necessary for the analysis of Lundgren's unstrained spiral vortex. The energy distribution of the asymptotic solution of Lundgren characterized by a similar geometry is investigated analytically (1) in the wavelet radius-scale space, with a wavelet selective in the radial direction, and (2) in the wavelet azimuth-scale space, with a wavelet selective in the azimuthal direction. The study of parity-alternating permutations of {1 2 } is extended to permutations containing a prescribed number of parity successions -adjacent pairs of elements of the same parity. Several enumeration formulae are computed for permutations containing a given number of parity successions, in conjunction with further parity and length restrictions. The objects are classified using direct construction and elementary combinatorial techniques. Analogous results are derived for circular permutations.
