This final project is a study about an analysis of the grammatical errors used in non-English immersion classes by the eleventh grade students of social programs at SMA 1 Pati. This study is conducted under the consideration that English has become one of the main subjects to study in every education level. In order to achieve a better comprehension of English for the students, some schools recently have applied a program which is known as immersion program. In this program, all materials of the subject are delivered to the students in English so that the students will get used to it. The purposes of this study are to analyze the communication among students, to find out the grammatical errors that students made during the class and to describe the process of making errors. The objectives of this study are to analyze the communication in the non-English immersion classes at SMA 1 Pati and to find out the grammatical errors that usually students do during the teaching learning process. I used qualitative research method in analyzing the data since the study is about finding and describing the process of making errors. Here I took the data by recording 90 minutes of Sociology lesson. Then, I transcribed it into written text by myself and gave mark at the errors that occurred. To find out the errors, I imitated Richards s table of classifying types of errors. However, I also used the Standard English Grammar. I classified the errors into six groups.
The topic of this diploma thesis is the comparison of Austrian and Spanish ELT textbooks in respect to grammar teaching. In the first part of this paper, approaches and methods in foreign language teaching are introduced and criteria relevant for the analysis of grammar in ELT textbooks are derived from them. Further, a number of additional criteria analyzing grammar at a more general level are included in the analysis of this paper as well. For the textbook analysis, which is presented in the second part of this paper, two ELT textbooks written for the Austrian market and two ELT textbooks written for the Spanish market have been chosen. It will be analyzed if the four ELT textbooks follow the principles of one single approach or method or of more than one approach or method to language teaching. Further, it will be analyzed to what extent the ELT textbooks adhere to these principles and if the recommendations made in the Austrian curriculum concerning the teaching of foreign languages are fulfilled in the ELT textbooks. Finally, it will be analyzed if there are any differences in terms of grammar teaching between the Austrian and the Spanish ELT textbooks analyzed in this paper.

Grammar has always been regarded as the necessity in establishing successful formal communication. However, students generally perceive grammar instruction as a necessary evil at best. They usually believe their messages will be understood even if a sentence is incorrect. On the other hand, vocabulary learning is the fundamental step in any language learning. Acquiring new vocabulary is of paramount importance in English for Specific Purposes as it is directed towards specific needs of students’ particular specialties.
