:The smoking prevalence, social nicotine dependence and efficacy of anti-smoking education among 40 dental hygienists aged 21 to 57 years (36.1 (SD10.5) years) old working at a dental hospital and their families were studied using the Kano Test for Social Nicotine Dependence (KTSND). The KTSND has 10 questions with a total score of 30. The questionnaire was administered at baseline, after an initial anti-smoking education program, before and after an additional anti-smoking education program at 6 months from the baseline, and finally at 13 months after the baseline. Twenty-six of the 40 dental hygienists (37.5 (10.7) years) responded to all the five questionnaires. The subject population was composed of one ex-smoker (3.8%), 25 subjects who had never smoked (96.2%), and 9 (32.5%) subjects who inhaled secondhand smoke at home. The total KTSND score of 8.6 (5.1) decreased significantly to 3.5 (4.4) after the initial anti-smoking education program, 連絡先:竹内あゆ美 〒 464-8651 愛知県名古屋市千種区末盛通り 2-11

The Committee for Tobacco-Free Society of the Public Interest Incorporated Association for the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (JSOMS) performed a web questionnaire survey on smoking habits as well as tobacco-free policies among 7189 eligible members who had registered their e-mail addresses with the society in September 2018. Among all eligible members, 1877 provided valid responses (26.1%; male 78%, female 22%) . The prevalence of current smokers, ex-smokers, and never smokers was 7.2% (male 8.5%, female 2.2%) , 33.3% (male 40.0%, female 9.3%) , and 59.5% (male 51.5%, female 88.5%) , respectively. The smoking rate was the highest in the 40s (8.6%) age group, followed by the 30s (7.8%) , 20s (7.1%) , and 50s (6.0%) age groups. The smoking rate was the highest among members who worked in private clinics (9.3%) , followed by those who worked in dental teaching hospitals (8.1%) , general hospitals (6.7%) , and medical teaching hospitals (4.3%) . The rate of asking patients about their smoking status regularly was the highest among members who worked in medical teaching hospitals (70%) , followed by those who worked in private clinics (63%) , dental teaching hospitals (62%) , and general hospitals (56%) . As for passive smoking measures, 96% of members responded that there should be a smoke-free policy in their hospitals/clinics.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to investigate the status of systemic diseases and evaluate the relationship between systemic diseases and periodontal conditions in patients attending the Periodontal Clinic of Kagoshima University Hospital. A questionnaire was used to ask subjects about gender, age, height, weight, smoking, and systemic diseases. Clinical parameters, such as probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing recorded at the initial visit, were used in the data analysis. There were 9 7 0 subjects ( male:34 1 , female:62 9 ) , and subjects in their fifties and sixties accounted for 6 0 .9 percent of the total. Subjects with systemic diseases amounted to 7 6 .6 percent. The most common systemic disease was abnormal blood pressure/ vascular disease. The smoking group, abnormal blood pressure/ vascular disease group, cerebrovascular disease group, and diabetic group had poorer clinical parameters at the initial visit than the no-systemic-disease group.
