English for specific purposes (ESP) courses are often discussed in terms of a two-way distinction between 'wide-angled' and 'narrow-angled' designs. The term 'wide angled' is used to refer to courses for learners targeting a broad work place, professional or academic field. The term 'narrow angled' is used to refer to courses for learners targeting one particular work place, professional or academic environment. Often wide-angled course designs are based on the premise that there is a set of 'generic' skills and linguistic features that are transferable across different disciplines and professional groups. Proponents of narrow-angled designs argue against this premise (Hyland 2002). This paper illustrates a number of narrow- and wide-angled course designs in ESP and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the options.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has grown in leaps and bounds in the last decade. Course design is one of the key stages in ESP. Hutchinson and Waters see ESP as an approach rather than a product, by which they mean that ESP does not involve a particular kind of language, teaching material and methodology. Language varieties are self-contained entities which extend from a common core of language. This paper has highlighted some of the issues involved in ESP curriculum development. The main focus is on the topic of language varieties and on the type of investigation ESP curriculum developers use to identify the gap between what learners already know and what they need to know in order to study or work in their specific target environments. Apart from this it examines the topic of wide- versus narrow-angled course designs.

In this day and age, it is absolutely indispensable for acquiring competence in English to grapple with the real impediments and huge challenges of the modern epoch. The emergence of English as a global language is among the factors that could explicate its vitality and its expansion. The basic burden of making language courses more relevant to learners' needs resulted in the advent of languages for specific purposes movement, known in English Language Teaching circles as English for Specific Purposes. ESP then, has since its inception in the early 1960s become one of the most dynamic branches of applied linguistics in general, and of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in particular. To amass relevant data, a case study was conducted through a combination of a questionnaire, classroom observation, and informal interviews with language teachers and subject specialists. The main aim of this present paper is to precisely delineate the teaching/learning process of ESP in the department of Computer Sciences at the University of ORAN1 in Algeria, and the learners' attitudes towards this teaching. For this purpose, it is necessary to explore the utility of ESP as perceived by learners, and to address problems faced by instructors. The results indicate that the students have a positive attitude towards ESP and that their poor achievement was due to multiple reasons. This digest concludes by offering some suggestions and implications as remedial actions to the major confronted concerns.
Some Aspects of the ESP Curriculum Design for Tertiary Institutions. , 2007
The topicality of the issue is explained by discrepancy between the current English for Special Purposes (ESP) curriculum and students’ wishes and demands of labour market. In order to create an up-to-date ESP curriculum that would suit students, employers and clients’ wishes, the following research methods were used: analysis of theoretical literature and sources, empirical study (students’ interviews, students’ questioning, lecturers’ interviews, employers’ questioning) and qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods. The conducted needs analysis allows creating a modern curriculum based on theory and practice – setting its goal and tasks, choosing the most appropriate syllabi types, selecting teaching methods that correspond to students’ learning styles and satisfy students’ wishes and the requirements of the industry. Key words: needs analysis, curriculum, syllabus and ESP competence.

Subject content is an important part of ESP courses. However, it is controversial how much subject content should be integrated into course content. This paper reviews the debate over specificity of ESP courses in three ESP development periods since 1960s. It will provide ESP practitioners, course writers and managers a theoretical overview to inform their teaching and researching practices.

Under the influence of the economic globalization, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) plays more and more important roles in various fields, and the requirements for English talents are much higher. However, due to the relatively short time of its courses construction in colleges and universities, ESP is far from maturity in our country. There are different problems in ESP teaching process, including the position of the talents training, the major and curriculum design, the talents training modes and the correlated ESP practical teaching, etc. Therefore, the following measures should be adopted with the purpose of exploring the college English talents training mode based on ESP: 1.To determine the talents training objectives based on the social needs; 2. To plan and write ESP textbooks based on needs analysis; 3. To innovate teaching methods combined with the features of ESP; 4. To emphasize the practical teaching; 5. To strengthen the ESP teaching staff construction.
