In the European linguistic landscape Italy stands out for its high stratification and rich diversity, with evolving identities, and with evolving relations between its language and dialects, alloglot languages, and a great number of immigrant tongues. While Italy boasts one of the historically most prestigious civilizations, its national language, unlike English, does not have the status of a language for international communication, and, unlike Spanish or Chinese, it does not span entire continents. Yet the language has spread across continents without an empire and armies, primarily through migrations of people who left the country at different times and with different purposes.

The aim of Ferrara's book is to provide readers and translators with a de- tailed dictionary of Italian dialectal, regional, and local expressions, and idioms. In the introduction, the author describes the genesis, aim of the study, and research methodology. He outlines the structure of the book, lists the abbreviations used throughout his work and provides the bibliography of the monolingual and bilingual dictionaries analysed. Ferrara's introduction situates his work critically between lexicography and the vast area of study of Italian dialectology.

Modern Languages Open, 2018

This special issue of Modern Languages Open is about how contemporary Britain perceives and imagines Italy, and how it mirrors itself in Italy's image. It aims at interrogating the current clichés about Italy, showing how imagery about the country is multi-faceted and prismatic, highlighting areas of dialogue as well as tendencies towards stereotyping. It problematizes the images of Italy as it is seen in various layers of British society -from the media, to film, to politics -showing how the construction of the southern European country still corresponds to a horizon of expectations more than to reality. Initially inspired by the one-day conference Italy Made in England, held at the University of Warwick on 22nd February 2014 and funded by the Warwick Humanities Research Centre, this special issue emerges from an ongoing dialogue among a group of scholars whose work focuses on the interaction between Italian and British culture.
