This article explores the evolution of Spanish teen series, broadcast by generalist televisions on vod platforms from its beginning at 1997 to 2020. The sample includes 24 productions starring teenagers. The analysis carried out reveals the configuration of a subgenre of its own and its concern to address issues of interest to young audiences. A progressive dissociation between romantic love and sex is evidenced, as well as less dependence on the family and an increase in generational conflicts

// This article explores the evolution of Spanish teen series, broadcast by generalist televisions on vod platforms from its beginning at 1997 to 2020. This article gives an account of four studies of youth culture in the areas of recent fiction film and television in Spain and Mexico. It argues that, although the primary texts are different in medium, format and audience address, they coincide in their treatment of such themes as friends and family, and sex and violence. The article also suggests that much-criticized youth TV series in both countries deserve both close textual analysis and sympathetic reading of the social media that they have provoked and with which they have converged. These give evidence of an active and sophisticated audience response.

Media convergence has considerably modified television-viewing practices. The interaction of the television with second screens has generated new ways of communicating between viewers, which they do while simultaneously watching television. This study combines focus groups and questionnaires to examine, from a generational perspective, the relationship between female viewers and Spanish television fiction and the resulting interactions conducted both face-to-face and through new technologies. The results question the view that female members of the digital generation interviewed watch media products in isolation and demonstrate that the social aspect of television viewing is one of its greatest pleasures. In general terms, our contribution confirms the influence of the generation gap on viewers’ preferences and their different ways of watching television. Therefore, the solidarity established between women to maintain and prolong viewing pleasure helps to mitigate the digital gap between older and younger female participants.
Introduction. The present study issues from the many reports about the high levels of Gender Inequality in our society and about the high influence of the audio-visual narrative in its configuration. We verified if contemporary Spanish teen films reproduce that unequal gender image. Methodology. We studied the protagonists of the most viewed Spanish movies released between 2009-2014 with a cast over 50% of adolescents, analysing the number of male and female characters and the reproduction of eight gender stereotypes. Results. The results confirmed the reproduction of an unequal gender image based on plot and character stereotypes that contributes to feed the creation and persistence of a social imaginary in young viewers about how women and men are, and thus perpetuating the gender inequality.

This research focuses on the way in which Spanish teenagers negotiate a highly rated global format TV series regarding representations of affective and sexual relationships. Results from two focus groups show that teenagers do not problematize the link between violence and desire implied by the storyline. Girls express a consensual admiration towards female characters with post-feminist traits and also show their desire to experience the main female character's love story, which reflects traditional femininity. In both cases, suffering and sacrifices for love's sake are justified; furthermore, men who are tough yet sweet are considered extremely attractive. Boys seem to be more reluctant to enter into and tolerate troubled relationships. They try to distance themselves from the narrative of the series, mocking the main male character. Teenagers say they are not affected by media products, yet they strongly identify with the characters and the storylines.
The overrepresentation of sexual content on television and the debate raised by new femininities have transformed research on sexuality and TV fiction into a fruitful field of study. Content analyses demonstrate that television fiction offers a distorted image of sexuality and that information on relevant sex issues is barely considered. This article analyzes the sexual representations of female characters in Spanish TV fiction using a hybrid method that combines SPSS Statistics tools and socio-semiotics. The sample consists of 709 female characters from all the shows premiered in 2012 and 2013. The sexual activity of the female characters is related to physical attractiveness and age, with the exception of children and adolescents. Young female characters in the sample identify empowerment with sexual assertiveness and control, while sexual depictions of women over 45 are almost non-existent. Sexual relations are presented as the " natural " outcome of romantic relationships and seduction.
