This course is NOT a survey of everything that has happened in the world since 1500. What this course will do is introduce you to some of the larger trends in world history since 1500, as well as introducing you to the study of history. What constitutes "history," how is it constructed and why are some histories more valid than others? We will explore these key questions throughout the semester, as well as examining how people and ideas spread across space and time in a quest to get a better understanding of globalized nature of the world in which we live. This course will explore whether the phenomenon of "globalization" is really as new as many contemporary commentators claim. This course meets the criteria for SUNY Cortland's GE 5 requirement (Western Civilization).
