The Canadian Design Research Network (CDRN) is a consortium of academic institutions and industrial partners working together to improve design outcomes in Canadian society through research in design. The network is composed of specialized research clusters associated with major design schools across Canada and includes the key disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, urban design, planning, industrial design, interaction design and human-computer interaction. The CDRN works collaboratively across disciplines, and in particular, with policy makers and computer scientists to foster a shared understanding of the concerns, perspectives and methodologies of all stakeholders in the design process

The Institute of Urban Studies is an independent research arm of the University of Winnipeg. Since 1969, the IUS has been both an academic and an applied research centre, committed to examining urban development issues in a broad, non-partisan manner. The Institute examines inner city, environmental, Aboriginal and community development issues. In addition to its ongoing involvement in research, IUS brings in visiting scholars, hosts workshops, seminars and conferences, and acts in partnership with other organizations in the community to effect positive change. Design is a key present and future contributor to the wealth of nations. It is a discipline in the sense that it is a coherent body of thought and practice, but in academia is almost invariably distributed across disciplines concerned with particular kinds of design. Successful design work involves many such disciplines.

In an essay in The Endless City: The Urban Age Project (2007), Deyan Sudjic proposes that the problems of our cities can be understood and managed through collaboration between three groups: policymakers, builders and theorists. The Regional Urban Studies Laboratory (RUSL) led by the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania provides collaborative practice-based research that links the academy – as theorists - with the local government - the policymakers and city builders. RUSL works directly with local authorities to examine urban issues in small towns and cities, developing collaborative processes that examine the specific nature of design issues that are socially, culturally and/or situationally conditioned. Research through the medium of design provides a process of iterative thinking, and the crossover between the disciplines of architecture, planning, sociology and economics provide fertile ground for research investigations. Relationships between the acad...

The prime objective of CDEN/ RCCI is to support all Canadian universities in the delivery of world class Design Engineering education and to give particular emphasis to achieving a broad based discipline coverage, through project based learning, at universities. The concept is simply to bring best practices in Design Engineering education to the fore and to make such best practice modules available among Universities on user friendly file servers. Flexibility is essential, yet there must be sufficient structure to facilitate convenient user access to all categorized materials. Such materials include fundamentals, technology concepts, lectures, case studies, design projects and other tools that will enhance Design Engineering education.

she has been the founding head of the School's Doctoral Programme with over 40 Scandinavian and international PhD students. The Programme is opened to PhD students recruited from various "making" professions such as artists, designers, architects, planners, art and design educators and engineers. She has a broad teaching and research practice from Scandinavia and other countries. During the recent decennium she has been mainly involved in issues of knowledge in the design professions. Since 1991 she has edited and co-edited the journal Research Magazine, which documents the development of this field of inquiry in the context of vocational and research education. She has lectured extensively at the doctoral level and supervised PhD students in norway and abroad. She has successfully served as a main doctoral supervisor for many PhD students as well as been external examiner at numerous public doctoral disputations in norway and abroad. She has been commissioned as an evaluator by several research councils in Scandinavia and has also experience from assessing eu-funded research.
