For art historian Stephanie D’Alessandro, Weimar Republic Sittengeschichten feature profusely “immoral or sexual subjects” which were transformed into legitimate sources of bourgeois ‘Bildung’ by the way of contextualization in exclusive book reproductions. In her reading these histories of manners did not confront the hypocrisy of the moral order. As much as one can agree with her compelling argument, her emphasis on the visuals neglects the textual component of the Sittengeschichten. Hence, this essay focuses on the publications by Eduard Fuchs, Leo Schidrowitz, and Magnus Hirschfeld, which contributed to a growing discourse that helped transform sexual knowledge from a medical specialty to a popular reform movement in Berlin and Vienna during the first decades of the 20th century.
