A skill is the learned ability to perform an action with predictable results within a given time, energy, or both. A skill can be general or specific. General skills in the work domain include time management, teamwork and leadership, self-motivation, and others, while job-specific skills are used only for a specific job. To assess skill, certain environmental stimuli and situations are usually required.

The objectives of this paper are to structure and discuss the main soft skills that have an impact on the employability in the Engineering field, aiming to fill the gap between education and job market in the STEM field. A systematized literature review (SLR) on Humanities and Engineering Education of 2638 articles showed that the most important soft skills for the employability of engineers can be grouped into six main groups: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking, Communication, Team Work, Ethical Perspective, Emotional Intelligence and Creative Thinking. The definition and relation between these skills and Engineering work are explored within the present work, concluding with a reflection about fresh graduate Engineers and their readiness for the job market.

In a transformation focused business environment, engineers with demonstrable soft skills are the ones who get the jobs. Soft skills are the most sought after skills in today's era and are hence termed as "21 st Century skills". The need to inculcate soft skills has become indispensable in order to succeed in an ever challenging and competitive environment at global level. Colleges are striving for creating employable engineers to meet the global demands of technically and ethically sound professionals. Institutes pan India are committed to train students in the areas associated with soft skills and English Language Proficiency. Soft Skills Training is to help students to gauge and promote various competencies of students, such that they excel in their career. It further helps to identify and assist the students who require additional support in enhancing their skills. This paper will focus on the need of soft skills for engineering students and how students with good Soft skills are more employable than their other counter parts.
Soft skills refer to a cluster of personal qualities, habits, attitudes and social graces that make someone a good employee and compatible to work with. There are two types of skills viz hard and soft skill. Soft skills are important for professional development, maintaining IPR and effective Communication. Soft skills include Inter personal and Personal attributes that enhance an individual's interactions, job performance and career prospects. There are many key soft skills that need to be applied in work place .Hence Soft skills training should begin for a person when they are students, to perform efficiently in their academic environment as well as in their future workplace.
Soft skills are the personal character traits. They encompass our attitudes, habits, and how we interact with other people. They are tangible and can be gained through experience. Soft skills are useful in every walk of life. They enable us to use technical skills and knowledge effectively and enhance our sociable skills. Soft skills are transferable and can be carried. They virtually refer to the ways we carry our self in the professional world. The majorcontributions of soft skills are making an effective communicator and develop lateral thinking. Soft skills are playing a vital role in professional world. If we want our career path smooth we must have soft skills.

The world labor market, besides the technical (hard) skills is increasing the focus on the so-called “soft” skills. Soft skills are a set of skills which allow an individual to fit in and successfully function in its environment. Because the engineering market is so dynamic and full of contacts with different cultures, soft skills need to be accompanied by so-called “global” skills, which ease the cooperation of people with different cultural backgrounds. But, there still remains a general dissatisfaction with the engineer’s soft skill levels, so there is a need for further development of the staff and a review of the high education curriculum.

The modern global economy is extremely competitive. An engineering company’s competitive advantage comes not only from its products but also from the professional service it delivers. Companies need employees who, in addition to being technically proficient, are well rounded individuals who have the necessary interpersonal skills and personality traits to succeed in project delivery. Recently, there has been a paradigm shift to companies becoming more people focused; this has been driven by the increase in the size and complexity of supply chains, technology and organisational integration.
The competition for Jobs in multinational companies and various technical positions have made soft-skills a pre-requisite. The Engineering and Management students aspiring to become Professionals not only need academic and technical skills but also Soft-skills to meet the goals of the organization. In this paper the importance of training engineering students in soft-skills is the focal point. In most of the engineering colleges, more attention is on technical education related particular discipline. Even though there is need for equipping the students with technical knowledge yet the jobs in multi-national companies around the globe are looking for more. The Engineering students in various disciplines such as Information Technology, chemical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering etc are required to broaden their hard skills to enslave soft-skills

In today’s higher education, the development of competencies based on the needs of the labour market, the role of practical training and the application of student-centred teaching methods are becoming more and more important. A particularly important question in engineering education is which abilities and skills are important for an engineer in a rapidly changing, information-based society. Therefore, in addition to hard skills, the development of soft skills also plays an important role. Our research was aimed at mapping the competencies of engineering informatics students and determining development opportunities. The Hungarian version of the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ) was used to examine the students’ personalities. The results of the research showed that the students’ soft skills must be developed – especially in the areas of openness, communication and cooperation. Students’ personality development can be facilitated by courses that focus on self-knowledge and self-esteem, ...

Engineering soft skills are required of an engineer to excel in his/her career and profession. For engineering education institutions affiliated to a central university and working with a prescribed curriculum, it is often difficult to find time for realworld training of students in soft skills. The current paper summarizes the programs designed for undergraduate engineering students of an affiliated engineering institution in order to circumvent this problem. They integrate training in engineering soft skills with the regular academic schedule exerting minimal extra-loading for the students and ensuring individual attention. The distribution of training programs in time also facilitates natural and gradual development of the values, attitudes and soft-skills. Further, integration of soft skill training programs into regular academic schedule enhances the interest of students in academics.
