This article is an attempt to present the concept of ethnography as a qualitative inquiry process in social science research. The paper begins with the introduction to ethnography followed by the discussion of ethnography both as an approach and a research method. It then illustrates how ethnographic research is carried out using various ethnographic methods that include participant observation, interviewing and collection of the documents and artifacts. Highlighting the different ways of organizing, analyzing and writing ethnographic data, the article suggests ways of writing the ethnographic research.
One popular method in qualitative research is ethnography. This discussion describes the definitions as well as the principles and characteristics of ethnography. To make the explanation clearer, the discussion then talks about the typical procedures of ethnographic research, the role of the researcher, research problem and hypotheses, the type of data collected and the analysis of ethnographic research, triangulation, and different kind of observations (participant and non participant observation) in ethnographic research. Some useful guidelines for conducting ethnographic research are also provided in this discussion. In addition, this discussion examines the advantages as well as the limitations of ethnography method. Finally, this paper also includes example of ethnography research in the context of language learning.

ABSTRACT Ethnography is used more and more often to study different subjects in health domain: the functioning and evaluation of healthcare systems; epidemiological research; laboratorial scientific research; biotechnology research; genetic research, among others. Certain methodological questions arise from critical reading of these works: How has ethnographic research evolved over the last few decades? What elements characterize ethnographic research as applied to healthcare? This paper seeks to reflect on these questions through two successive developments: 1. the evolution of the ethnographic method and its use in research on health; 2. the methodological aspects of an ethnographic study conducted with elderly people in the city of Fo...

Hulst, M. van, M. Koster & J. Vermeulen (forthcoming, 2015) Ethnographic research. In: M. J. Dubnick and D. A. Bearfield (eds.) Encyclopedia of Public Administration and Public Policy 3rd Edition. Abstract This entry outlines three aspects of ethnographic research. First, we describe in what way ethnographic research implies a distinct way of knowing. Second, we discuss the use of qualitative methods in ethnographic research. Third, we take up the role of writing, which is both a way of documenting research as well as an analytical tool in the research process. The entry concludes with a summary of the strengths and limitations of ethnographic research in public administration and policy studies.
Ethnography is a branch of qualitative research that is used in public health study. This review article is developed to conduct a detailed analysis of ethnographic research by addressing the key characteristics, drawbacks, and advantages. This essay focuses on an important methodology of qualitative research that is ethnography. All such aspects of ethnographic research are discussed by referring to the relevant theory and research work. This study used secondary data such as articles and book chapters to shed a light on different aspects of ethnographic research. A comprehensive overview of ethnographic study is discussed which will help future qualitative researchers to have a quick grasp over this less discussed type of qualitative study (Ethnography).
An Ethnography of Global Landscapes and Corridors, 2012
In its most general sense, ethnography refers to the study and representation of culture. It is a research practice that many claim to be the most scientific of the humanities and the most humanistic of the sciences and has become something of a storytelling institution possessing a good deal of scholarly legitimacy. Ethnography claims a sort of documentary status by the fact that a researcher, for a time, lives with and, to a degree, lives like those who are studied.

As a discipline concerned with cultural and social life, Anthropology has a unique scope in compare to other social sciences and humanities that addresses a thorough methodological scrutiny following the theoretical shifts over time and space. The current methodological trends in anthropology claim the role of the researcher as observer (to explore and examine a culture) to grasp the underlying meaning of the participants to interpret the action, perception and networks of the setting in contexts. In this juncture, it is necessary for the researcher to design his/her research methodology in such a way that clarifies the dimensions of the researcher, participants, selection of the research area, and/or problem and the very pros and cons that validates the research in its own essence. Ethnography as one of the major qualitative research approach in anthropology provides an opportunity to construct a specific kind of written observational manuscript about a particular culture. The present authors intend to address the different dimensions from historical genesis to gradual shifts into different theoretical perspectives and critiques as well, that arises from the discussions of ethnography to encircle the possibly significant ideas and issues in as simple and straightforward manner as possible.
