Abstract

This paper analyses the editorial, ideological and aesthetical relations within the images publishedin "O Malho", as well as their authors, in the context of “Bota-Abaixo” (1902-1906). It argues the existence of an overlap between the political over aesthetic struggles which, through the concepts of "taste" and "beauty" were able to impose specific idealsof "civilization" and "progress" to the urban project of the First Republic. Thispaper disposes of a gathering of 682 images published at the time and a path analysis of 45 agents (owners, authors and executive officers), the authors being identified by their signatures on the caricatures. The results show a deep combination between the fields of art, politicsand that of the intellectuals; and it allow a reconsideration to the way the magazine has been classified by the literature: going from a “critique-of-the-system journalism” to a more conservative editorial line.
