Abstract

Written documents about the Late Antiquity of the Cappadocia Region have reached the present day, however, the archaeological remains of this period are almost non-existent except for a few cities. Almost no archaeological remains have survived from the important cities of the period. Based on the period sources, some information can be obtained about the city status in the Late Antiquity. The settlements that can be localized with the researches generally do not exceed the village scale and sometimes the town scale. In this study, after the situations of the settlements in Anatolia of Late Antiquity were discussed in general, the city settlements in Cappadocia in the same period were analyzed. Period resources and contemporary studies were utilized for in identifying settlements. Three settlements in the Cappadocia region, where the remains of this period have reached the present day, are particularly striking. Of these, Mokissos and Tyana are the capital settlements with city status, while Sobesos is a smaller-scale bishopric center. Especially, the excavations in Kemerhisar (Tyana) and the archaeological excavations to be carried out in Helvadere (Mokissos) and Şahinefendi (Sobesos) will play an important role in obtaining more detailed information about the Late Antique settlements of the region. The study was considered as a preliminary study in understanding "Comes Domorum Per Cappadociam," an institution unique to Cappadocia.
