Suggestions for undergraduates selecting a topic for a dissertation
Your research paper, and the resulting thesis statement, must be an ARGUABLE issue. Be prepared to present the actual findings of your research convincingly even if you discover that your findings differ from your personal opinions. Remember, research is objective and not a " soap box " for personal views. The following topics have been divided by subject:
My general area of research and supervisory interest is econometrics applied to fields such as production and demand analysis and macroeconomics; also, more narrowly, financial econometrics, in particular asset pricing applications. One way to develop an essay/thesis topic that I might be willing to supervise is to peruse the following books, which offer more of an econometric/empirical orientation than the macroeconomics texts you are likely to have encountered as a student. All but Adda and Cooper can be found in the McPherson Library under the indicated call numbers. In the more theoretically-oriented books such as Hansen & Sargent and Miao, focus on the empirical applications.

Abstract This article provides an explanation of the process for selecting a research topic. The article uses Kuhn's classic work on scientific revolutions to delineate the steps in developing theoretical research within an area. The paper provides methods for preparing to develop a research topic, steps for approaching a research problem, as well as methods for problem theoretical development.
What is Research? Research is an endeavor to satiate an unfulfilled appetite. This can be from the individual, group, company or business angle. This appetite comes in many forms that maybe but not be limited to: a. The wish to solve a once off individual problem b. The wish to solve a recurrent persisting problems at home, school, company or organization or country or world at large. c. The wish to understand the nature of any of the above problems d. The wish to master the way a problem is solved and e. The wish to understand, master a problem and in addition, create new knowledge in the domain field of the problem. As is expected, these research endeavors can be found at different levels of one’s academic career. While this can also be the case in industrial research, I am not going to delve much into this area but to concentrate on the academic side. This is the area that may interest most of us since we aspire to complete our studies in the shortest possible time. The question that will quickly come to mind is: What can I research in for me to fulfill the requirements of my study career? ( Continued in the paper)

Alternatives to traditional dissertations offer students new ways to reflect on their learning. They can invite group work, interdisciplinarity, different writing styles and digital outputs, and engagement with external stakeholders. In these ways, they can offer new methods for assessment, employability skills development, motivating and empowering learners, and novel approaches to applied research (Healey et al. 2013). Alternative dissertations can be divided into two categories: 1. Engaged [with external stakeholders] 2. Capstones and ePortfolios. Engaged Engaged dissertations can include consultancy, education, community, business or charity collaboration. These can take the form of a structured consultancy project, a communication Dissertation Alternatives

This article argues that the changing nature of the dissertation experience, and its associated supervision calls for more detailed attention to the development of dissertation supervisors. Dissertations have always played a major role in student learning. The following themes constitute the kernel of the article: the role of the dissertation in the student's learning experience, managing the link between theory and practice, digitization of information resources, research methodologies and design, and finally, the implications for the role of the supervisor. It is suggested that without an awareness of the changing nature of the dissertation experience, and a more proactive approach to supervisor development, there may be serious degradation of the dissertation experience and outcomes.

There were five participants who carry different CGPA grades. The research went on from one category to another and the data have been collected through the face-to-face interviews. The students' interview provided the researchers with an explanation of their level of confidence in relation to their conviction in choosing their thesis topics. The study revealed the conceptualizations regarding the challenges of the students for selecting a good research topic. The researchers expected that this research study would explore the strategies of the students which support the beginners to choose a thesis topic. The researchers conducted interviews at a university campus to attain the understanding of struggling points of the undergraduate students while choosing their thesis topic for dissertation course.

Abstract Several authors have cited the success of undergraduate research programs in recruiting graduate students. However, while a significant number of undergraduates change their career plans based on undergraduate research programs, a large number of the participants enter the programs already planning on attending graduate school.
