These poems are attributed to three heteronyms of Fernando Pessoa: two numbered texts from O Guardador de Rebanhos (The Keeper of Sheep) of Alberto Caeiro; ten loose poems and a cycle of five sonnets by Álvaro de Campos; and five odes of Ricardo Reis. Each translation contains three elements, respectively: the English recreation by Monteiro; the facsimile of the Portuguese original by Fernando Pessoa (or of the last Portuguese version, if there exist more than one Pessoan document concerning the poem); and a transcription of the Portuguese text, in the case of a manuscript (solely notes in the case of a legible typescript prepared by Pessoa). RESUMO Publicam-se aqui vinte-e-dois poemas pessoanos vertidos para o inglês por George Monteiro. Esses poemas são atribuídos a três heterônimos de Fernando Pessoa: dois textos numerados de O Guardador de Rebanhos de Alberto Caeiro; dez poemas soltos e um ciclo de cinco sonetos de Álvaro de Campos; e cinco odes de Ricardo Reis. As far as we know, this is the only Pessoan translation of a Spanish original into English. This article tries to acknowledge such singularity by pointing out links between Pessoa's archive and his private library, and also by studying the meter and rhythm of Pessoa's version-now available in full thanks to Nicolás Barbosa's transcription and edition, published in this issue of Pessoa Plural-a version that renders with taste and wit the metrical qualities of Espronceda's original. RESUMO A versão de Fernando Pessoa de El estudiante de Salamanca [O estudante de Salamanca], de José de Espronceda, é uma curiosa singularidade na obra pessoana. Até onde sabemos, não existe outra tradução de Pessoa de um original espanhol para uma versão em inglês. O artigo tenta reconhecer essa singularidade, apontando as ligações entre o espólio de Pessoa e sua biblioteca particular e estudando os elementos métricos e rítmicos do texto de Pessoa-agora disponível em sua totalidade graças à transcrição e edição de Nicolás Barbosa, também publicada neste número de Pessoa Plural-, uma versão que traduz com sensibilidade e inteligência as qualidades métricas e rítmicas do original de Espronceda. Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer Edited by Patricio Ferrari and Jerónimo Pizarro A collection of scholarly essays dedicated to Fernando Pessoa as English reader and writer including unpublished material from the author’s archive and private library With Pessoa’s digitized private library online, the importance of English to Pessoa has become indisputable, particularly in his formative years: numerous English authors served as the bedrock from which his poetic sensibility emerged, developed and soared. In fact, a significant amount of Pessoa’s writings in English and in Portuguese (including those attributed to his heteronyms and/or to other literary personae) were greatly informed by these (his) original sources. Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer provides ample evidence of his fruitful, lifelong relationship with the English language. In addition to its thematic focus, this latest volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies features sections dedicated to unpublished materials, new transcriptions of texts Pessoa originally wrote in English and verse translations by Pessoa into Portuguese. Contributors to this volume include George Monteiro, Patricia Silva McNeill, Richard Zenith, and Stefan Helgesson.

At that time, referring to Pessoa’s English output, Edwin Honig pointed out that much remained to be said about the poet’s bilingualism. No one more than George Monteiro has committed himself to exploring this largely ignored aspect of one of the greatest Modernist poets. Almost two decades ago, in his ground breaking Fernando Pessoa and Nineteenth- Century Anglo-American Literature (MONTEIRO, 2000), he discussed at length the complex web of implications regarding Pessoa’s role as a voracious reader and writer of English. The publication of Inside the Mask: The English Poetry of Fernando Pessoa, conceived and organized in that same pioneering spirit and coming full-circle almost forty years later, wishes to celebrate George Monteiro—the renaissance scholar, the man.
