The average human age is increased and a common problem that the elderly people are facing is 'impaired mobility'. the only option for the disabled to ascend stairs is to purchase a high-tech battery operated wheelchair with elaborate sensors and gyroscopes, which can cost around $25,000. As a result, there is a high demand for a cheap and efficient way to climb stairs with a practical wheelchair. With the safety of the user as a main concern, it is the goal of this report to provide a lightweight, inexpensive stair climbing wheelchair. In order to significantly reduce cost of production, the wheelchair will not have any outside power source. The user's strength is the only means of energy for climbing. Our specific design relies on three critical modules: wheels with retractable spokes, a lock in ratchet on the axel, and a tilted seat. By focusing on integrating lightweight materials into the design, the force required to operate the wheelchair should be very manageable. The final product should provide the disabled with a safe, reliable, and inexpensive wheelchair capable of ascending near...

In this thesis, the design and analysis of an affordable automatic step climbing wheelchair for physically disabled is presented. The motivation is to cater the needs of disabled people who are at economically disadvantage position. Global statistics of the disabled persons report shows that the number of disabled people is increasing with the increase in world population. It may be noted that the electrically operating lifts are not common in two or three storey buildings. Therefore, step climbing wheelchair can make life easy for disabled people in terms of accessing any location in a building without help of others. Advanced wheelchairs that are available in the market are having high cost, i.e., approximately ten lakh rupees. So in this thesis a cost effective automatic wheelchair is designed which can be made available for the masses. It helps physically disabled and elderly people to move across stair cases easily.

— The main goal of this article is to give information about the different wheelchair designed till now. The aim of this paper is to review the state of the art in the technology for stair climbing wheelchair for people with disabilities. We give review on the research that has been done by difference groups on stair climbing wheelchair. The main goal is to provide the reader that which technology and mechanism can be used to develop the particular wheelchair. By this article reader gets idea about the environment friendly and by this they can easily compare each type of wheelchair. In this paper, we have mentioned various manually operated as well as automated wheelchairs that can travel on both plane terrains and also in the staircases. We also present data comparing their capabilities in terms of step climbing and standard wheelchair functions.

The main focus is to improve the lives of disabled people by providing an independent as well as comfortable living environment. This paper aims to design a wheelchair for the people suffering from disabilities such as motor impairment. The proposed design mainly focuses on enhancing the wheelchair with the low-level stair climbing feature. The wheelchair is designed using CATIA software and the clustered wheel drive mechanism is used. The measurements for the wheelchair are selected according to the standard anthropremetric measurements. This design will help in providing mobility to the disabled persons, independent of the terrain.

This paper presents a solution for a stair-climbing wheelchair that can climb single steps or entire staircases. This device was designed in order to ensure greater autonomy for people with reduced mobility . The main component of the wheelchair structure is a three-wheel locomotion unit that allows obstacle climbing thanks to an epicycloidal transmission. The other characteristic element is an idle track that behaves like a second foothold giving static stability during stair-climbing. Another important feature concerned with this design is a reconfiguration mechanism that makes the wheelchair suitable both for stair-climbing and for moving on flat ground. This feature allows performances and overall dimensions comparable to traditional electric wheelchairs. The choice and design of the mechanisms for the reconfiguration phase are the main topics discussed in this article and represent the principal innovations of this wheelchair compared to earlier versions.

Stairs remained as vital and inevitable means to reach the elevations in domestic and commercial buildings. Options to them are Elevators, Ramps but they are not feasible in all cases. Simplicity of this designs lets practical implementation at low cost.

Nowadays autonomy in the area of mobility is accepted to be of high value which may be sometimes hampered due to some form of disability. Hence, wheelchairs continue to play a vital role to allow for mobility of the disabled people. But this autonomy is not applicable in environments having steep slopes or staircase. Thus, a wheelchair having staircase climbing ability could be the remedy. Additionally, such a wheelchair could also provide an easy means of transport for patients in hospitals. An attempt has been made to design such a wheelchair that will provide increased mobility in environments with staircases and steep slopes. The different mechanisms have been analyzed and compared to select the most suitable mechanism. The mechanism thus chosen has been modeled and analyzed using SOLIDWORKS computer software. The aim of this paper is to present a mechanism for staircase climbing of wheelchair and to analyze the effectiveness of the same. After making the necessary design change...
One of the basic problems of user on manual wheelchair is overcoming architectural barriers (kerbs, stairs etc.) on its way. Even though many research studies have been reported in different fields to increase the independence of wheelchair users, the question of overcoming obstacles by a wheelchair always remains as topic of discussion for many researchers. In this paper, the author has proposed a manual stair climbing wheelchair concept which can overcome the architectural barriers to a considerable extent. Major part of the paper focuses on the proposed creative design concept and concludes by discussing upon the physical working model developed for the proposed design solution.
