Deux Hésiodes opposés dans l'Antiope d'Euripide

2020, Antiquité Classique

Abstract

The debate between Zethus and Amphion in the first episode of Euripides' Antiope is built, to a large extent, on an appropriation of the persona of Hesiod. The twins assume in turn the role of Hesiod to recognize in the other each of the two great vices of Perses, Hesiod's brother: Zethus sees Amphion as lazy, and Amphion sees Zethus as greed.
