Perspectives on Communication Theory (Masters), 2014
This course provides an introduction to the epistemology and theory in the field of human communication. We will explore the primary communication paradigms in order to develop a well-rounded theoretical understanding of the discipline. Through reading broadly and discussing a range of paradigms, students will increase understanding of personal paradigmatic choices, learn how these choices shape theory and research, and establish criteria for theory evaluation. Further, the class will also explore specific communication theories and follow some of the debates surrounding theoretical development. This class is usually paired with COMM 710, Introduction to Communication Research Methods.

This paper proposes a view of the communication/cognitive psychology relationship which attempts to reclaim the concept of "communication" as being fundamental to the understanding of communication phenomena and thus to the discipline of communication studies. This view is presented in the paper as an alternative to a view which conceptualizes communication as an extension of psychology. The paper offers an account of the relationship between the two disciplines in which an understanding of human cognition must presuppose the ability of people to commanicate. In view of the current ferment with respect to the identity of the communication discipline, the paper argues that the concept of communication can, and must, be reclaimed by the communication discipline as its central mode of explanation. This chapter charts the historical influences on the theories and models that shaped the communication discipline. It illustrates the importance of U.S. and European scholars from not only the beginnings of the communication discipline, but including those who were pre-eminent in other academic disciplines such as sociology, psychology, political science and journalism, as well as examining emerging scholarship from Asia that focuses on understanding cultural differences through communication theories. The chapter traces the foundations and heritage of communication study from five perspectives: ($) communication as shaper of public opinion; (%) communication as language use; (&) communication as information transmission; (') communication as developer of relationships; and (() communication as definer, interpreter, and critic of culture.

The article deals with the attempts to typologize communication theories proposed in recent decades. Examining their flaws it argues that communication theorizing is inseparable from the practice of research, therefore (1) the appropriate criteria for typology of communication theories are to be found in combining theoretical conceptions of communication with methodologies of research and their grounding epistemologies; (2) it is epistemology that provides the basis for bringing together the conceptions of communication and the methodologies of research. It also argues that using epistemological and methodological criteria, two -naturalist and interpretive -traditions of communication theory and research may be distinguished.

Both communication and social psychology are large in scope and complexity, with striking subdisciplinary differences about content, theory, philosophy, and approach. Describing and distinguishing intersections in these circumstances are not easy, and to do so implies a false sense of objectivity or precision. Indeed, outsiders to academia might be confused about why the distinction between communication and social psychology exists at all. What, after all, could be more socialpsychological than communication? Communication involves interrelationships among people; requires that people acquire a shared understanding of what particular sounds, words, signs, and gestures represent; and is the means through which people influence others and are in turn influenced by others-this is also core business in social psychology. So from the outside, the case for similarity seems more compelling than the case for difference.
