Transformer Protection
International journal of scientific research in computer science, engineering and information technology, 2017
The main intention of this project is to design a microcontroller based system that can be used in power transformer protection. The system checks the operating parameters of the transformer i.e. current and reports the quantity that is flowing through the transformer. The system is designed such that it is able to detect currents above the normal operating level and isolate the power transformer from the distribution line. This isolation process is to ensure that the transformer is safe from any excess current levels that can make it to overheat thus get damaged. It gives a solution to the need to reduce cost of maintenance and ensure that supply of electricity to consumers is not interrupted for long periods taken while repairing or replacing destroyed transformers.

A "Transformer" is a static electrical device used in electric power system to transfer power between circuits through the use of electromagnetic induction. The purpose of this report is to present a solution for the transformer protection. This particular section describes its brief objective, scopes and aims. Being the most expensive equipment, transformer is the most crucial device in the distribution system. Our design focused on the low voltage side protection, due to the low voltages and high current, simple fuses cannot be deployed to keep the transformer in check. We provide a solution for the protection of transformers against the over voltage, under voltage, over load, short circuit protection and over heat protection as well as protection against 1 phase failure in 3 phase system by connecting it in open delta.
Transformers play out a crucial part in a power system in ensuring dependable power delivery to power consumers. This paper contributes the idea of approximately exceptional varieties of transformer protection to be extra useful for investigating the protection system of the transformer. In this review paper, an exertion to assemble improvements in the protection of the transformer. Endeavors had been developed to cover every one of the methods and philosophies used to that end. This consists of transformer protection using a PLC system, Fuzzy set, GSM module, relay, Arduino, etc. This paper additionally consists of observing & controlling the transformer with the assist of a PLC system and single-board pc. It additionally shows the impact of inrush current on transformer protection. There are numerous significant parts introduced in the transformer which are exorbitant so these must be protected in an abnormal condition. The transformer plays a top-notch task within the power system to alternate voltage and current levels so proper protection for the transformer is essential to keep up dependability in the system. Normally, a properly planed transformer protection system presents an extremely good life with no uninterrupted power supply. To grow life, efficiency, ordinary performance then reduces strain on the transformer is the simplest way so this protection system assist here to study those matters properly.

The power transformer is an electrical equipment that needs continuous monitoring and fast protection since it is very expensive and essential element for power system to perform effectively. Various methods for the protection are available. Most of the methods should be known for the protection of the transformer before practically protecting the same. Here a review is presented for various methods available for the protection of transformer. The most common protection technique used is the percentage differential logic, which provides discrimination between different operating conditions and internal fault. Some condition as, inrush current and CT saturation can cause mis-operation of differential protection. Few methods to solve this problem are also reviewed. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) of power transformer is an investigative tool to monitor its health and to detect failures by recognizing anomalous patterns of DGA concentrations is also discussed. Some additional methods for ...

This paper investigates protection integrity of distribution transformers in Ghana. The purpose of the study was to find the main causes of distribution transformer failures in Ghana. The study was conducted in the Ashanti East Region, one of the operational areas of Electricity Company of Ghana ECG with high incidence of distribution transformer burnouts. Data on status of protection systems on 676 distribution transformer stations were taken and analyzed. It was found that protection integrity at distribution substation is riddled by indiscriminate use of copper links to replace blown HRC fuses and high ground resistance. The study clarifies why distribution transformers with lower power ratings are more vulnerable to abuse of protection systems than distribution transformers with higher rated powers. The paper reports on the investigation and proposes alternative solutions in mitigating the problem. Although the background work of the study is restricted to Ghana, the applicability and importance of the work would be useful to the scientific community.

Transformers are a vital part of the transmission and distribution system. Monitoring transformers for problems before they occur can prevent faults that are costly to repair and result in a loss of service. Transformers being the essential part of power transmission system are expensive, as is the cost of power interruptions. Because of the cost of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, especially at remote sites, the utility industry has begun investing in instrumentation and monitoring of transformer. This paper describes the design and implementation of “Transformer Protection and Parameters Monitoring”. The aim of this paper is to provide an alternative, effective, efficient and more reliable method of protecting fault from power transformer which may arose as a result of overload, high temperature or a high input voltage. To safeguard the damage of the transformer with the aid and help of microcontroller we monitor and control the entire circuitry. Thereafter regarding the mo...
