Blog discusses China's dispute with the EU, Japan and the United States over the tariffs and export quotas on rare earths. The authors find that rare earths are nothing worth fighting for. Later, Charlemagne wonders whether or not a new European Commission proposal to give itself the power to close public-procurement markets to companies from countries deemed not to reciprocate in allowing European firms to compete for their public contracts is to protect the EU's trade, or to help Nicolas Sarkozy in his election campaign.

January Date 2 German Chancellor Angela Merkel underlines the need of the '27 states in Europe' to 'stand united as a community' and expresses her hope of working with French President Emmanuel Macron in ensuring the EU's future. 3 Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Polish counterpart, Mateusz Morawiecki, make a common announcement supporting the right of states to have more control over immigration, particularly their right to reject migration quotas. 3 After criticizing the Cologne police for sending a New Year's tweet in Arabic, Beatrix von Storch (deputy leader of the Alternative for Germany party), becomes one of the first people to be affected by a new law aimed at curtailing hate speech and illegal online content. 3 Austria's Vice-Chancellor and far-right leader Heinz-Christian Strache proposes that housing asylum seekers should be placed in barracks, with a curfew restricting their movements. 3 The EU's latest reform of the financial markets, Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) II, is launched. It aims to boost transparency and address some of the root problems of the 2007-2009 financial crisis. 7 Former Norwegian minister Trond Giske, deputy leader of the Labour party, announces his resignation amidst allegations of sexual harassment. 8 Prime Minister Theresa May unveils the new minister in charge of a nodeal Brexit-MP David Davisas part of a cabinet reshuffle. 8 European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker calls for the EU27 to contribute more money to the EU joint long-term budget (over 1 per cent of the bloc's GDP) post-Brexit. 9 In the absence of common EU rules, five EU commissioners meet representatives of online platforms in Brussels in the EU Internet Forum to discuss the spread of illegal content online, including online terrorist propaganda and xenophobic, racist or hate speech.

What's in a name-one wonders, after listening to some reactions to the "State of the Union" speech delivered by Commission President Barroso at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 7 September. The intuitive, subliminal association with the American tradition of the US President's annual "State of the Union" address to Congress, in fact, triggered a wave of reactions and comparisons that, in turn, dwelt more on the form than the substance of the message sent to the elected representatives of the European citizens.
