This study aimed to analyze the vocabulary size and mastery level of English department students. The present study employed a descriptive-quantitative research design. The subjects of the study were the first, third, and fifth semester students majoring in English language education at Institut Agama Islam Negeri Ponorogo. Three-hundred and nineteen students participating in this study were given the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) to measure their English vocabulary size. The findings of the present study reveal that the students only knew about 1,366-word families. The result was still below the threshold, as suggested by the scholars. The findings also show that the participants had a very low mastery level. They did not even master the 2,000 or 3,000 high-frequency word level. It can be concluded that the participants had low vocabulary proficiency. The results of the study suggest that the future research is needed to focus on investigating vocabulary learning and instructional strategies that are effective in developing the students' high-frequency words and academic words.

Successful language learning depends crucially on a strong vocabulary. It is estimated that a vocabulary of 8000 word families is the necessary goal for English language learners who have to deal with unsimplified spoken and written texts. While some of these students had intermediate English language proficiency, the majority of them had low language proficiency. Data for the study were collected in three stages. Firstly, a Vocabulary Size Test was conducted to determine the students’ vocabulary size. Secondly, a Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire was used to investigate the vocabulary learning strategies employed by the students. Finally, a semi-structured interview was carried out with eight students as a form of triangulation that supplements the findings gleaned f...
Vocabulary is a fundamental requirement of language acquisition, and its competence enables independent reading and effective language acquisition. Effective language use requires adequate level of vocabulary knowledge; therefore, efforts must be made to identify students' vocabulary base for greater efficiency and competency in the language. Students with limited vocabulary size may fail to comprehend the contents of the reading materials and their learning may be impaired. This study had aimed to address this concern and sets out to examine the vocabulary knowledge, i.e. in terms of vocabulary level and size of undergraduates at a private university in Malaysia, where English is the medium of instruction. 120 first year undergraduates from three academic programs, who participated in this study, sat for the Nation and Laufer's (1999), Version A of Productive Vocabulary Levels Test, which is recommended and used for diagnostic purposes. The findings show that almost none of the students have acquired the vocabulary required at UWL, and most of them managed to acquire only a 2000 word level at Level A. At UWL, a larger proportion fell on the lower scale, implicating that their vocabulary knowledge is insufficient to cope with the reading text and possibly with the studies at the university.

Several research studies have proven a direct relationship between the amount of words known by a foreign language student and his/her language proficiency. Therefore, knowing the amount of words that our students are acquainted with would help teachers to predict their general ability in the foreign language. The aim of this study is to determine the vocabulary size of a group final year students in a High School in Murcia. The instrument used to measure students’ vocabulary size was Nation’s Vocabulary Levels Test. This test has been validated on successive occasions. A total number of 49 students sat the exam in the case of the first test containing the 1000 and 2000 levels; and 38 sat the second test. The results obtained were poorer than expected.

The study used a sample of the third level students at the English-Faculty department of Education-Aden at the University of Aden in three categories according to their academic achievement in the class (High =80-100, Medium= 70-79.99 and Low =less than 69.99). The researcher used Nation and Beglar (2007) (14000) vocabulary size test to measure the vocabulary size. Based on the analysis of students' correct answers in the VST, the study found that students' vocabulary size ranges between 1000-8000 words with variant percentages. It was found that (80%) of third level students' vocabulary size (high 08-100 and medium 70-79.99) is in the range (1000-3000), (76%) of third level students' vocabulary size (high 08-100) is in the range (1000-5000) and (51%) are in the range (1000-8000). The study found that (59%) of third level students (medium 70-79.99) are in the range (1000-5000) and (40%) of them are in the range (1000-8000). The third level students (low, less than 69.99) recorded the lowest size by (50%) in the range (1000-3000), (41%) in the range (1000-5000) and only (21%) are in the range (1000-8000). Considering the total word size of the three categories together, the study found that (70%) are in the range (1000-3000), (59%) range in the range (1000-5000), and (37%) are in the range (1000-8000).

This article reports on the results of two studies on receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge of first-year English majors in an English-medium degree programme. The aim of the study is to answer these research questions: (1) to what extent do the receptive and productive vocabulary sizes of English majors increase after a year of instruction; (2) what is the ratio between the increases in receptive and productive knowledge; (3) do English majors achieve the expected threshold vocabulary size of 4.000-5.000 word families, after a year of instruction, that will enable them to follow lectures in English? In order to gauge students' receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge, participants in this study-159 first-year English majors-were given two vocabulary tests at the beginning of their first and second years of study: the Vocabulary Levels Test and the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test. The results indicate that: (1) learners' receptive vocabulary did not expand, whereas their productive vocabulary increased by 21 per cent; (2) their overall receptive vocabulary knowledge was larger than their productive knowledge and the gap between the two narrows after one year; (3) despite having received instruction, after a year, learners still lack the vocabulary threshold to meet their academic needs. Based on these results, the study reflects on the relationship between the content of the teaching materials used in class and the students' vocabulary knowledge. Recommendations aimed at informing teachers about the appropriate steps to take to approach language proficiency teaching are also discussed.
The main objective of this study is to evaluate undergraduate EFL learners' vocabulary learning strategies and its relation to the learners' vocabulary size. There are five different categories of vocabulary learning strategies as determination, memory, social, cognitive, and metacognitive. These categories cover an overall 35 strategies included in vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire. The reliability index obtained for vocabulary learning strategies showed a reliability coefficient of 0.74. The other instrument used in the current study, vocabulary size test, is a standardized test developed by Nation . A total of 125 Iranian undergraduate students majoring in TEFL participated in the study. Cluster sampling was used to select participants of the study. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and statistical multiple regression at significant of p<0.05. The findings of this study led to some suggestions to enhance students' vocabulary learning, increase their vocabulary size, and subsequently improve their English learning.
