Kidney stone disease is a crystal concretion normally produced within the kidneys. it is the third most commen disorders of urinary system.kidney stone is a common condition causing significant morbidity and economic burden. At any point in their lives, between 1% and 15% of persons worldwide are affected by kidney stones. Kidney stones are of various types, of which calcium oxalate is the most common. Remarkable advances have been made in the treatment of kidney stones following the introduction of percutaneous nephrolithotomy and extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).Todays, Computed Tomography (CT) scan without contrast medium is the preferred screening method for investigating urolithiasis. The recurrence rate reaches approximate 50%, risen to 70% within 10 years, which is a significant problem in its therapy and management. Herbal therapies have found to be more effective with minimal associated after effects and also minimize the recurrence rate. Data from research and clinical trials showed that phytomedicine and plants derived products are useful in the treatment of kidney stone diseases. So the aims of present review to provide an update data about composition and mechanism of stone formation, current methods for investigation and the present trends in research of medicinal herbs used in the management of urolithiasis disorder.

Kidney ailments have increased several folds in the last two decades. Kidney stones are one of the most common urinary tract problems to be found. It has been associated with increased risk of renal failure if not treated in the early stages. Kidney stones are well known as renal calculus. They are mainly composed of minerals like calcium oxalate. An interaction with the local practitioners in Raigad district of Maharashtra, India revealed that several plant species are being used as lithotriptic agents. A simple technique has been designed to evaluate the lithotriptic activity of extracts of leaves of Bauhinia purpurea L., seeds of Celosia argentea L. and seeds of Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. Cystoliths and raphides which are aggregation of minerals are used as target minerals and their dissolution by the extracts of these plants are used as technique for evaluating the efficacy of these plants as lithotriptic agents.

In ancient time people used plants as drugs. They used parts of plants like leaves, fruits, roots, stem, flowers, seeds, bark or whole plant. Traditional medicine is known as the primary health care in the world, about 70% of developing countries depends on the plant based treatment. In current scenarios most of the institutes promoting the use of plant based medicines. For the treatment of kidney stone tribal people uses several plant or juice of the plants for example Momordica charantia, Moringaolieferia, Amnivisnaga, Terbulusterrestris, Dolichosbiflorus, Arvalanata, Cotusspiralis,Vaccinumoxycoccos, Coriendrumsativum, Embelicaofficinalis, Petroselinum crispum, Barosmabetulina etc. Keywords: Kidney Stone, Herbal Treatment, Medicinal Plants, Antioxidants, Uric Acid, UTIs, Cysteine, Struvite, Diuretics

Many novel compounds had obtained from the plants having medicinal property. Among the medicinal plants, those having antiurolithiatic properties are important and are very effective in controlling and curing of stone formation in the urinary tract. The inhibitory effect of aqueous methanolic extract of traditionally used medicinal plants were studied on the formation of calcium oxalate (CaOX) stone in aqueous as well as in urinary medium. The inhibitory effects were presented as the percentage of inhibition or the degree of inhibition as compared to blank urine. The inhibition in stone formation is due to its capacity of increasing the solubility product of its constituents and is determined through chemoinhibition experiment. The antiurolithiatic properties of different medicinal plants were studied and presented in decreasing order in the present work. The finding give support the effectiveness of many medicinal plants against the urolithiatic cases specially in CaOX formation as used in the folklore medicine.
This review paper highlights the potentiality of medicinal plants in the kidney stone disease activity. Urolithiasis is a common disorder which has affected a considerable number of people worldwide. The problem of urinary stones or calculi is one of the major health disorder and many remedies including herbal have been employed. Kidney stones are called as renal calculi. Kidney stones are associated with chronic kidney disease. Kidney stones may cause extreme pain and blockage of urine flow. Kidney stones are a risk factor for chronic kidney disease and progression to end-stage renal disease. Persons with kidney stones are more likely to have traditional risk factors for chronic kidney disease (e.g., hypertension, pre-existing kidney disease, diabetes, proteinuria, and albuminuria). Drug therapy medications, such as protease inhibitors, antibiotics, and some diuretics, increase the risk of some types of kidney stones. Managing diet, medication use, and nutrient intake can help to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Obesity increases the risk of kidney stones. Medicinal plants are used as urolithotriptic agents. This review paper is aimed to explore and documentation of available herbal treatment for kidney stones. Some of the plant species listed in this review paper have the potential active compounds and may aid researchers for the future study of natural products, which may be useful to treat kidney stones.

Kidney and urinary stone disease (Nephrolithiasis and urolithiasis) are the condition where urinary stones or calculi are formed in the urinary tract. The problem of urinary stones is very ancient; these stones are found in all parts of the urinary tract, kidney, ureters, and the urinary bladder and may vary considerably in size. It is a common disease estimated to occur in approximately 12% of the population, with a recurrence rate of 70-81% in males and 47-60% in females. The treatment of kidney and urinary stone diseases such as a western (allopathy) medicine and surgery is now in trends. However, most people preferred plant-based (herbal) therapy because of the overuse of allopathic drugs, which results in a higher incidence rate of adverse or severe side effects. Therefore, people every year turn to herbal therapy because they believe plant-based medicine is free from undesirable side effects, although herbal medicines are generally considered to be safe and effective. In the p...
Today a wide-ranging number of population in the world is enduring from disease like a kidney stone, the most usual cause of the kidney stone is a poor lifestyle, less water intake, and inappropriate dietary habits. This Problem is, very obsolete and these stones are found in various parts of the body, such as the urinary bladder, kidney, ureter, and urinary tract. Herb plants have been used since old times due to their additional safety, and efficacy as well as subsidiary side effects in comparison with current synthetic drugs. Consequently, in this article, we have provided an outline of the several herbal plants which inhibit the process of stone formation and show stone dissolving activity due to their diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant-like properties and various phytoconstituents like sterols, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins, etc.

A renal calculus or kidney stone is one of the most prevalent and widespread conditions in the world, without a guaranteed cure. None of the known and available treatments prevent the recurrence of kidney stone formation. Hence, new and improved treatment methods are constantly being developed. This study claims to use plant systems as tools to provide a scientific basis for ethnobotanical treatments for kidney stones using Ficus elastica cystolith and Colocasia esculenta raphides as targets and Tectona grandis fruit and Bryophyllum pinnata leaf extracts as treatments. In addition, the phytochemical analysis of these extracts is also proposed. Observation was performed by photomicrograph of cell cystolith and raphides before and after treatment. The method was specifically used to study dissolution of calcium oxalate crystals and can provide a potential alternative to animal testing. This article emphasizes a method to validate the efficacy of ethnobotanical herbal remedies which show in vitro anti-urolithiatic activity. They can be further taken up for in vivo studies by treating plant cells containing calcium oxalate crystals as a model to study the effect of plant extracts. An ethical consideration on this alternative method offers a more humane approach to in vivo testing for biomedical science.
