Nascido em Palmeira dos Indios (Alagoas), Jose Marques de Melo obteve os titulos de Bacharel em Jornalismo (Universidade Catolica de Pernambuco, 1964), Bacharel em Ciencias Juridicas e Sociais (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, 1965) e Pos-Graduado em Ciencias da Informacao Coletiva (Centro Internacional de Estudos Superiores de Comunicacao para a America Latina, Quito, Equador, 1966). Primeiro Doutor em Jornalismo titulado por universidade brasileira (1973). Atualmente e Titular da Catedra Unesco de Comunicacao para o Desenvolvimento Regional, Presidente (2005-2008) da Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicacao (Intercom) e Socio Emerito (2004) da Sociedade Brasileira dos Pesquisadores em Jornalismo (SBPJor). Jornalista, professor, pesquisador, educador, formou varias geracoes de jornalistas e de pesquisadores academicos.

A tecnologia de montagem de componentes eletrônicos em superfície (SMT–Surface Mount Technology), utilizada na produção de placas de circuito impresso que compõem os mais diversos aparelhos eletrônicos, popularizou-se desde a última década, permitindo a miniaturização do produto final, o aumento da sua complexidade tecnológica ea melhoria de eficiência do processo produtivo.

In Northeast Brazil, more specifically in a part of a microregion called Agreste (State of Pernambuco), a rural context historically integrated by street fairs in small and medium urban places has developed and undergone structural changes over the last decades. If, on a hand, the local, cultural, social and economic dynamics increasingly connects to contemporary market, on the other hand, a heritage of rural, commercial and provincial tradition continues to be present in living and working conditions of some inhabitants of Agreste. Some particular street fairs, the sulanca's fairs, were created collectively and so on followed by large shopping centers dedicated to trading ready-to-wear clothes, domestic small factories and then with a hired personnel, firms -many changed from those domestic factories -as their owners themselves. So, what is understood here as the agreste of confections reflects both changes and continuities. In this place, people who have lived amidst agricultural activities, street fairs, small family businesses or domestic factories and have already managed business of production and commerce of ready-to-wear clothes for years nowadays are aged between 30 and 50 and didn't complete the equivalent of high school or even less. Starting from the construtivism inherent to Bourdieusian sociology and its instruments of thought, this thesis presents an understanding of the contemporary condition of that people and their businesses, both evolved from this local, collective history. It is argued that from and through such collective legacy incorporated by the Merchant habitus, sociocultural distinctive signs, beyond the economic ones, differentiate them and their businesses while they all compose a specific Field irradiating from axis-cities: Caruaru, Santa Cruz do Capibaribe and Toritama. At the same time, common heritages remain and make them similar in other aspects along this process of cultural incorporation which is performed by the business owners, children of fairs, in the way they constitute the agreste business field. Drawn from the confrontation of large primary empirical material with Bourdieusian sociology, the thesis is proposed as a contextualized interpretation of this cluster of people and business. vii 8
