The abstracts of papers were selected through a blind reviewing process by two referees in each academic field concerned. Our criterion for selection reflected the need to include a cross-section of research in the diverse disciplines of Korean Studies. Papers in this volume contain only those papers that were submitted by the authors for publication. Minimal formatting changes have been made in the editing process; no modifications have been made to the content of the papers.
Nineteen papers by European, Korean, and American scholars, most of them former students or otherwise connected with SOAS, who had presented their research in seminars and conferences at the CKS. They were selected and organized into four parts according to research areas, namely 1. History, 2. North Korea, 3. Literature, Philosophy and Society, and 4. Music, Heritage and Art.

The Department of Korean Studies at Charles University in Prague will host the 28th biennial AKSE Conference from 20 (Thursday) to 23 (Sunday) April 2017 in Prague, Czech Republic. The Association for Korean Studies in Europe, founded in 1977, is the main scholarly society for Korean Studies in greater Europe. Its objectives are to stimulate and coordinate academic Korean studies in all countries of Europe, and to contribute to the spread of knowledge of Korea among a wider public. The biennial AKSE conferences provide an opportunity for European scholars of Korean studies to gather and exchange research results. Hosting the membership meeting, they are the most important event of the association as such. AKSE conferences are also a way for European scholars to communicate with the global academic community. We thus warmly welcome non‐Europeans and non‐members.
This is a keynote address at the 5th Philippine Korean Studies Symposium, held at the University of the Philippines Nov. 9-10, 2017. In it, I discuss four issues from recent history that are still hotly debated in South Korea (collaboration with the Japanese, the conduct of the Korean War, the Park Chung Hee years, and the Kwangju massacre) and why there are such different interpretations of those important episodes.
