Early in the 19th century the newspaper Paul Pry dedicated itself to exposing political corruption and religious fraud. It was edited by the audacious Anne Newport Royall at a time when few women were newspaper editors and even fewer were willing to take on the establishment.

Ryan, a brilliant Americanist whose early encouragement inspired me to persevere whenever I doubted myself. I reach back in time to thank Kathryn Kish Sklar, Norma Basch, Penelope Johnson, and Clarice Feinman, team teachers of my last class at New York University in 1980, on the history of American women. I've never forgotten their intelligence and passion, nor that of Marlene Springer, who has no idea of the lifelong impact that her junior-level nineteenth-century American literature course at the University of Missouri had on this undergraduate in 1973.
This article considers the letters of Anne Newport Royall, first female American journalist, and her sojourn in Moulton, Alabama in the early 1820s. Royall encountered a new denomination, the Cumberland Presbyterians, and a new word, "Covaulting." She documented her opinion of both, as she experienced them in outdoor revivals.
