This contribution focuses on the Delphic oracles reportedly given to the Athenians on the eve of Xerxes' invasion. It aims at distinguishing and defining various issues: the historical problems involved in these texts (some of which seem doomed to remain open questions), the possible hints to these oracles in the Athenian tradition before Herodotus (especially in Aeschylus' Persians), the relationship between the Del phic responses to the Athenians and the complex Herodotean narrative accounting for them, and finally the role of this narrative in Herodotus' Histories.

ABSTRACT Pausanias saw in the Athenian Stoa at Delphi an inscription, different from the one still visible on the Stoa’s stylobate, which he rightly connected with Phormio’s victories in the Corinthian Gulf in 429 BC (10, 11, 6). The not exact correspondence between its contents reported by Pausanias and some details of the narrative in Thucydides enables us to reconstruct with a greater precision the movements of Phormio after the two battles. On the other hand, the quite unnoticed exact correspondence between the Spartan allies listed in the inscription as reported by Pausanias and the catalogue of Spartan naval allies in Thuc. 2, 9, 3, as well as the absence from these lists of Anactorion, although her ships had joined the Peloponnesian fleet at least in the earliest phases of that campaign, give grounds for the suggestion that Thucydides’ catalogue mirrors the make-up of the Peloponnesian fleet that actually fought in 429 and that just the inscription seen by Pausanias may have been (one of) his source(s).

Delphi, one of the best known sanctuaries of the ancient world, has been studied in many different ways, especially with a specific attention to the cult of Apollo, the Oracle, the Panhellenic Games. The studies about the “other gods” of the sanctuary are, today, sporadic and dated. The present work has a double purpose. At first, we want to collect the sources proving the presence of the extra Apollonian cults at Delphi, considering archeological, epigraphical and literary sources. Following, we want to propose a religious-historical interpretation of the gods analized, underlining their role and value into the greek polytheism. The multi-disciplinary method, anchored in the concrete data, let us going beyond the source&#39;s informations and consider the meaning of the greek holy sphere, of what was proper, with the intermediation of myth and ritual, of the greek way to think about the world.
