Abstract

Old Istanbul rowdies (kabadayı, “swashbuckler”), today are perceived as a manifestation of the lost values like local “neighborhood cultures”. They are depicted in a way that they are not to be assorted together with the rounders (külhanbeyi), acting as if they are some sort of people’s policemen. This assumption has emerged due to the influence of literature and cinema in the last period, however it is closely tied to their genuine role in the past society. This study focuses on how the figure of rowdy in this context changes and examines the transition of the figures described as rowdy, of Istanbul by period of late XIX. century and early XX. century. It aims to interpret the shifts and transitions in the society using these figures as examples. The study analyses the rowdy figures under different names, involving in various social movements from Street culture to uprisings. This study scope of the between XVIII. century and end of XIX. century, period of janissary rowdies and district rowdies. Approach to rowdy figure’s for criminal history and subculture history. Add to this under the spotlight, transition of a city and a society. Applied to archive documents, newspapers of the period, memoirs and some research works for study.
