The Role of International Organizations in Promoting Global Governance, 2025
This proposal examines international organizations' role in promoting global governance. Global governance has emerged as a paramount concept in today's interconnected world, offering solutions to complex and interrelated global challenges. International organizations (IOs) are central in facilitating international cooperation and commitment through formalized structures, shaping international law, and addressing multifaceted global issues. However, challenges such as a perceived lack of legitimacy, complex decision-making processes, and difficulties implementing agreed-upon mandates often hinder their effectiveness. This research proposal seeks to explore and analyze the pivotal role of international organizations in promoting global governance across various domains, including public health, education, economy, and security. By examining the historical development, theoretical perspectives, and contemporary challenges these organizations face, this study aims to shed light on their roles, limitations, and potential contributions to global governance. It also addresses the question of how IOs can overcome these challenges and enhance their effectiveness in promoting global governance. The proposed research intends to investigate potential solutions to these challenges, such as strengthening democratic and accountable aspects of IOs, refining decision-making processes, and improving implementation mechanisms. Through a comprehensive exploration of these solutions, this research aims to provide valuable insights that can inform policymakers, scholars, and practitioners in navigating global governance's complexities and contribute to a more just, peaceful, and sustainable global order.

While the United Nations is the only unifying organization that ‘brings together’ almost all the countries of the world, it is obsolete in the context of global governance, not only as a result of the Security Council’s structural prioritization of power and self-interest, but also because of the International Court of Justice’s lack of competency in conflict resolution and its political biases, as well as due to the General Assembly’s problem of voter manipulation.

A preeminent feature of the post 1990 World is the role been played by Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) in the emerging global public space. NGOs have become very important actors on the global scene; contributing to, and sometimes determining the form and content of global public policy. Indeed, ala globalization, they are today able to provide institutional infrastructure, knowledge, and material resources for citizens to engage local governments and global policy-making institutions. This role of NGOs in the global public space has not only redefined the matrix of global governance institutions, but also of the ideas of global citizenship. What has accounted for the rise in the role of NGOs in the global public space? How have /are they contributing to refining global public policies? And what are the emerging institutional challenges facing the NGO sector? It is these questions that are reflected upon in this study. INTRODUCTION. A growing significant feature of today's global politics and governance, is the preeminent role played by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO). These organizations have today
Understanding the role of state and non-state actors in the global system is contingent upon a comprehensive analysis of the system through historical perspective. To do so, one, first, needs to conceive the emergence and development of the state-centric system. The phenomenon of state emerged in the seventeenth century with the collapseof imperial powers. Nation-states have played a dominant role in the world politics for about three hundred years. However, with the increased impacts of globalization processes, the power of the nation-state have begun to decline and, eventually, it has been forced to share its power with emerging entities. These new actors of the global system include a variety of units ranging from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to inter-governmental organizations (IGOs). This paper discusses underlying factors of declining role of nation-state in the internationalsystem in the context of new emerging powers of non-state actors. Key words:Non-state Actors, Nation-state, Globalization, Hegemonic Power.
