What is the place of grammar in language teaching? How necessary it is for a teacher of English as a Foreign Language to have a knowledge of English grammar? How necessary it is for the teacher to have a knowledge of the grammar of the students' language or languages?
This essay discusses three major questions the first of which is the place of grammar in language teaching. The writer believes that the teacher of language chooses whether to teach a grammar point or not according to the age of the learners and states that young learners need fun and never tolerate the grammar rules. On the contrary, it is believed that adult learners not only are tolerant of grammar but also need it for their professions. On the other hand, some grammar points are so basic that students need to know them or they may make mistakes that impede communication so the teacher cannot be avoid them. Finally, lack of enough exposure to language in some countries is mentioned as another reason for teaching grammar. The second question is the importance of the knowledge of grammar the teacher of English has to possess for which the paper states two reasons. The first reason is that most students expect the teacher to know all the grammatical details so it is vital for the teacher to possess them. The second is the fact that teachers’ knowledge should remain up-to-date so that they can meet the students’ needs. The third question that the essay answers is the importance of the teacher’s knowledge of the students’ grammar which is viewed vital in order to diagnose the students’ problems more easily.

In the current age of communicative language teaching, whereas some language teachers and learners suppose that grammar is not really essential for communication, other scholars agree that grammar still plays an important role in developing the language system of learners. The propensity of this study is to define what grammar is and what it is good for. From the recent perspectives and findings of different researchers, a critical evaluation is conducted to explore the importance of grammar in language teaching and learning as well as how to effectively apply grammar instruction into language teaching. The findings show that grammar is beyond a set of rules or structures and having knowledge of grammar can support learners to enhance their EFL learning progression. Keywords: grammar, teaching grammar, grammar instruction, language instruction
This Paper addresses different perspectives to the teaching of Grammar in ESL/EFL classroom. The debate is about whether Grammar should be taught directly through direct instruction or indirectly through the communicative approach.
The Word Grammar means different things to different people. To the ordinary citizen, it connotes to correctness or incorrectness of the language that he or she speaks. To a school student, it means an analytical and terminological study of sentences. Knowledge of grammar helps the student in the correction of mistakes and improvement of written work. A person can't learn a foreign language accurately only through a process of unconscious assimilation. Grammar is a sure ground of reference when linguistic habits fail us. So grammar is indispensable for the student. In this paper my aim is to bring the attention of the language teacher as well as the learner about the real utility of grammar in teaching English language. Hence, let's discuss some given statements below. Role of Communication Now-a-days communication has become the heart and soul of the human life. The process of communication chiefly deals with speaking, listening, reading and writing. No one really learns grammar. It has become natural phenomenon that we start speaking what everybody speaks around us. We gradually develop a better sense of understanding with the passage of time. We don't study grammar of our own mother tongue to use it for daily speaking, but when we need to polish our own mother tongue or we want to learn a foreign dialect, we have to study its grammar and we usually do that. When we come to learn a new language like English language, we need to study its grammar; the importance of grammar cannot be ignored or neglected, and before we do that we need to understand what grammar is.

The study reviews some recent methodological trends to provide some perspective on contemporary concerns and challenges concerning grammar in language instruction. When and to what extent grammar should be taught to language students. Based on student feedback, the study provides a decision-making technique for addressing this debate and educational variables than using a model of communicative competency that considers grammatical competence. Grammar interacts with meaning and social
Grammar is very important because it is the system that guides us to using correct sentence structures so as to make our meanings through words understandable. I strongly agree that grammar should be taught in the ESL classroom. Why is grammar so important? Looking back into my English language teaching experiences, I’ve never seen any of my ESL students, especially for those English is not their first language, could speak proper English without learning grammar rules.

Every language has its grammar. Whether it is one's own mother tongue or second-language that one is learning. The grammar of the language is important. This is because acceptability and intelligibility, both in speech and in writing within as well as outside one's own circle or group depend on the currently followed basic notions and norms of grammaticality. A knowledge of grammar is perhaps more important to a secondlanguage learner than to a native speaker has intuitively internalized the grammar of the language whereas the secondlanguage learner has to make a conscious effect to master those aspects of the language which account for grammaticality. It is, therefore, necessary for us, to whom English is a secondlanguage, to learn the grammar of the language. So, without the knowledge of the grammar of a particular language, we cannot properly use the language in communication. But question may arise what should be the method and approach to the study of grammar. Several approaches have been followed through the ages for the study of English grammar. The major approaches are the traditional approach, the structural approach, the notional-functional approach and the communicative approach.
