Joseph Roth. "Deux semaines avant la fin de l’Autriche"

2019, Europe. Revue littéraire mensuelle.

My article in this collection investigates one of the most curious and foolhardy episodes of Roth's agitated life when, in late February 1938, he boarded a train from Paris to Vienna in order to save Austria from Hitler's Anschluss. His plan, in fact, was to persuade Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg to resign in favour of Crown Prince Otto von Habsburg (the son of the late - and last Emperor/King of Austria-Hungary - Karl I/IV), the first step towards a restoration of the Dynasty. This article seeks to separate fact and fiction, to understand Roth's motivations, to analyse the events - personal and historical - which led to this enterprise and finally, to assess the consequences of this predictable failure.
