Alcuni casi di deposizione funeraria a San Leucio (Saggio VII)

Scienze dell'Antichità 18-2012

Abstract

The archaeological survey, carrier out during the 2007 excavations on the north-east of the Early Christian basilica of Saint Leucio, interested a limited area (7.6 x 4.1 m) and brought to four infant burials, of which two subjected to secondary use. In accordance with data from the entire necropolis of Saint Leucio, our results confirm the choices of orientation (in the entire necropolis, it prevails the deposition orientation of the burials to south-west or south/south-west), and the practice of reusing the graves, in accordance with a widespread practice in the Mediterranean area during Late Antiquity and High Middle Ages. Once again, the picture shows a typical cultural use of the Longobards (Lombards) compared with the Byzantines. This thesis could challenge the chronological attribution of the basilica of Saint Leucio, set till now to the eighth-ninth centuries, by anticipating to the sixth-seventh centuries the first and bigger diffusion of burials and the consequent transformation of the Christian monument in a properly cemetery basilica.
