Data is extremely powerful phenomena in the current era. The organizations are dealing with huge amount of data in their daily basis. With this kind of information flowing around, it is extremely important to have a proper data governance mechanism in place to manage the data, its components. One of the important aspects of data governance is keeping the information of the data up to date and accurate, link the data to appropriate source and business owners. Metadata management is the way to ensure that information can be accessed, integrated, analysed and used by IT and business to the best effect. There are quite a few tools available in the market for managing the metadata; Rochade is one of them. This paper explores the aspects of metadata management, why it is important for organizations, implementing the lineage, how the mapping is being created in the Rochade tool, and risk analysis through the lineage.

The principle of provenance is the fundamental theory of archives science, which also possesses important reference value in various areas of research and practice. This paper commences with investigating the core value of the principle of provenance, considering the principle to be the unity of theory and method and its core value lies in following historicalism and respecting essential attributes of the archives. Then the authors focus on the realm of government information management and explore the metadata implementation of the core value of the principle of provenance in the era of electronic records. In its essence, the principle of provenance requires full understanding and preservation of the source information of the record. In the age of electronic records this has ascended to the significance of obtaining "contextual information", which is often stabilized as metadata in electronic records, reflecting the process of the record's creation, maintenance and long term preservation. Source information as the contextual information reflecting the record creation process, its typical form of expression in metadata is provenance metadata. Therefore the authors explore the implications of provenance metadata and its essential forms. The authors hold that source information is the indispensable characteristic information in records and archives, and also the essential form for the principle of provenance to exhibit the connotations of "provenance". This paper also explains that provenance metadata has further realized the core value of the principle of provenance, playing important roles in ensuring the authenticity, integrity, reliability and usability of electronic records as well as being the basis of their long term preservation and usage. In addition, the authors make concrete exposition on the composition and function of provenance metadata, considering it to be composed of entities and elements, specifically including such metadata as institution, business, environment, relationship and time. Different provenance metadata entities and elements record the source information of the electronic record from its creation until transfer to archives, performing various important functions in government electronic record management. The authors further their research through analyzing and comparing the characteristics of provenance metadata in government electronic record metadata standards at international, national and local jurisdictions levels. Some feasible suggestions for future research are made in the conclusion.

Knowledge-intensive applications pose new challenges to metadata management, including distribution, access control, uniformity of access, and evolution in time. The authors identify general requirements for metadata management and describe a simple model and service that focuses on Resource Description Framework (RDF) metadata to address these requirements.

The rapid changes in the means of information access occasioned by the emergence of the World Wide Web have spawned an upheaval in the means of describing and managing information resources. Metadata is a primary tool in this work, and an important link in the value chain of knowledge economies. Yet there is much confusion about how metadata should be integrated into information systems. How is it to be created or extended? Who will manage it? How can it be used and exchanged? Whence comes its authority? Can ...

Metadata usually called data about data represents information about data to be stored in a data warehouse. Importance of metadata arises from the fact that it is needed to map data from source systems to data warehouse with the help of Extraction Transformation Loading (ETL) tools. Metadata helps in developing consistency in data collection and usage and moreover provides the foundation for Data Change Management. It facilitates user to have faster and more accurate access to the data that is needed. Metadata also plays an important role in real world environment as seen in case of legal system nowadays that focuses on preservation of data about its records i.e. metadata so that the validity and admissibility of evidences can be ensured. This paper intends to find a better and more efficient way to determine the importance of metadata in the data warehouse and thus performs its quality evaluation. Keywords—Consistency, Data Change Management, ETL, Metadata.

Metadata management is a crucial success factor for companies today, as for example, it enables exploiting data value fully or enables legal compliance. With the emergence of new concepts, such as the data lake, and new objectives, such as the enterprise-wide sharing of data, metadata management has evolved and now poses a renewed challenge for companies. In this context, we interviewed a globally active manufacturer to reveal how metadata management is implemented in practice today and what challenges companies are faced with and whether these constitute research gaps. As an outcome, we present the company’s metadata management goals and their corresponding solution approaches and challenges. An evaluation of the challenges through a literature and tool review yields three research gaps, which are concerned with the topics: (1) metadata management for data lakes, (2) categorizations and compositions of metadata management tools for comprehensive metadata management, and (3) the use...

This chapter describes the implications for managing metadata, a higherlevel abstraction of data that exists within repositories, applications, systems and organizations. Metadata is a key factor for the successful implementation of complex decision environments. Managing metadata offers significant benefits and poses several challenges, due to the complex nature of metadata. The complexity is demonstrated by reviewing different functions that metadata serves in decision environments. To fully reap the benefits of metadata, it is necessary to manage metadata in an integrated manner. Crucial gaps for integrating metadata are identified by comparing the requirements for managing metadata with the capabilities offered by commercial software products designed for managing it. The chapter then proposes a conceptual architecture for the design of an integrated metadata repository that attempts to redress these gaps. The chapter concludes with a review of emerging research directions that explore the contribution of metadata in decision environments.

This paper motivates a comprehensive academic study of metadata and the roles that metadata plays in organizational information systems. While the benefits of metadata and challenges in implementing metadata solutions are widely addressed in practitioner publications, explicit discussion of metadata in academic literature is rare. Metadata, when discussed, is perceived primarily as a technology solution. Integrated management of metadata and its business value are not well addressed. This paper discusses both the benefits offered by and the challenges associated with integrating metadata. It also describes solutions for addressing some of these challenges. The inherent complexity of an integrated metadata repository is demonstrated by reviewing the metadata functionality required in a data warehouse: a decision support environment where its importance is acknowledged. Comparing this required functionality with metadata management functionalities offered by data warehousing software products identifies crucial gaps. Based on these analyses, topics for further research on metadata are proposed.
This articles deals with the general concept of Metadata, some definitions, types, creation methods and tools for Metadata. Enumerates some of the important functions like Resource discovery, Organizing digital resources, Interoperability, Archiving and preservation. Discusses ultimate goals of different types of metadata. It also elaborates some standards regarding metadata. Encompasses role of metadata in the life cycle of information objects in the digital information system. It enumerates an overview outlining the basic elements of Dublin Core Metadata standard. Besides Dublin Core, other metadata standards are just mentioned to well acquainted by name.
