In recent historiography, there is a consensus that the modernizing reforms promoted in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century have changed the capital's architecture and the relationship between its population and the urban experience, introducing new practices into daily lives of cariocas. Among them was the introduction of sports, with the press being the main vehicle for its dissemination. This article explores the presence of fashion dedicated to sports in chronicles and examines its contribution to the validation of a collective imagination about leisure. The literary representation of sportswear gains complexity in the "civilisation du journal", in which social relations are regulated by the production and reading of magazines. Therefore, the aim is to map out the access to fashion paradigms by readers of periodicals. As a case study, two chronicles of João do Rio on the sports theme are analyzed. Published in the column "A Semana Elegante" in 1916, they focus on the female presence and their clothing in the practice of tennis and sea bathing. We conclude that the importation and representation of sports practices and their fashion acted in the construction of an imaginary of elegance in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Surfing, practised along the whole Brazilian coast, was previously viewed as a man's sport; women are now taking to the waves and are among the best professional surfers in the world. This article focuses upon a group of women surfers using data gathered from semi-structured interviews with them. From the interviews it became apparent that at all times, in or out of the surf, the female surfer's body is always a contested terrain, particularly in the economic context and when dealing with sponsors. In this context tensions emerge from the clash of traditional patriarchal mindsets regarding newly emergent femininities. Women in sport and their supporters reject the paradigm that considers them to be merely decorative and subservient to men, Brazilian female athletes are beginning to imagine and construct their bodies differently. As part of the first generation of professional Brazilian female surfers, this group represents a new site for the liberation of Brazilian women.

Sport forms a structural element in the culture of modern society. Surfing is a millenary activity with its roots coming from Polynesia. In the beginning of the 20th century began to spread throughout the world. The study of the social history of the sport in Spain is a topic that is so far not fully developed. The arrival of surfing in Spain, which took place later than in other European countries, can be understood as a symptom of freedom and modernity in a country dominated by an antiquated and non-democratic regime (Franco regime). In this socio-political context surfing emerged in the 60’s, in several parts of Spain at the same time, with thanks to the influence of TV series, magazines, and movies arriving from the United States (its new political and military ally since the 50s).

Indexed in Web of Science. This is a pioneering research in the area of social history of the sport in Europe. It has completely reconstructed a chapter of social history in Malaga, and a relevant chapter of the European history of Sport, since Malaga was the surf pioneer core of the Mediterranean sea, something that has kept forgotten several decades. Due to the fact that there were no bibliographical sources on this topic, it has been necessary to create primary sources and thus, i) conduct in-depth interviews with pioneers, not only from Malaga but from the whole Spain, ii) to present documents such as photographs, letters and official federative documents in order to contrast, date, order and describe the history of surfing in Malaga. 2. This research presents the first in-depth study, focusing on the genesis, the consolidation and the boom of surfing in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea, in comparison to the rest of Spain. 3. It presents the first in-depth study regarding the genesis of bodyboarding in Spain. 4. It presents an explanation, through the study of several geographic and socioeconomic variables (explicative level of research), as to why Malaga was a surfing pioneer core in the Mediterranean Sea. 5. It presents a wide bibliographical study of the main studies published about history of surfing.

This article aims to understand the sociocultural appreciation of coastal spaces in the tropics from the perspective of conventional modern maritime practices. Starting with therapeutic and recreational activities on the beaches and sea areas, such as Sea Baths and Sun Bathing, this study includes an analysis of contemporary sporting, aquatic and nautical recreation, with aspecific emphasis on kitesurfing. The methodological approach uses a database and fieldwork carried out by the Coastal and Leisure Urbanization Research Group of the Urban and Regional Planning Laboratory of the Federal University of Ceará. The understanding is multiscalar, and the theoretical assumptions are associated with urban geography and leisure. The two main developments are first, nautical sports, especially kitesurfing, which is the newest variable for the incorporation and modernization of the beach in the tropics. The second is the formation of a global phenomenon materialized significantly in different contexts, such as the Northeast of Brazil and the coast of Ceará, in particular.
The objective of this article is to present a historical overview of the relationship between sport and the environment in Brazil. In this country, as elsewhere, the so-called adventure sports are among the main expressions of this relationship. In general, many of these sports claim a status of innovation and originality, sometimes challenging the conceptual parameters for the more common definition of sport. However, the construction of these imaginary is strongly influenced by a long historical process. Accordingly, leisure experiences in nature, in historical development since the nineteenth century, play an important role in the current allocation of the social meaning of extreme or adventure sports.
