This is an introductory course to peace and conflict studies. It will provide students with a broad set of theories, analytic tools, and policy mechanisms for understanding and acting on issues of peace and conflict. The full year course will revolve around integrating and applying theoretical perspectives on the causes and consequences of conflict to case studies such as Libya, Darfur, Argentine or South Africa. The first part of the course will provide a review of the numerous theoretical and empirical approaches, which underpin study of peace and conflict from onset to resolution. The second part will look at a range of academic discourses that are essential to understanding the multifaceted nature and consequences of contemporary conflict in the production of peace and justice. Throughout the course, students will participate in a diverse range of writing and speaking exercises, such as book reviews, presentations and debates, all structured around case studies, and intended to demonstrate the wide range of skills necessary for applying the theoretical and policy analysis underpinning the course.
