2018, RUSSIAN ORIENTALIST YURI ZAVADOVSKY IN BAKHCHISARAY

Abstract

The paper tells about the scientific activity of the Russian orientalist Yuri Zavadovsky (1909-1979) in Bakhchisaray museum in 1965 and 1969. Yuri Zavadovsky had left Russia after the October Revolution but after living in France and North Africa came back to the Soviet Union in 1951. Zavadovsky translated an inscription on Arabic amulet from the Museum collection. Unfortunately the artifact which beared the inscriptions has not survived. He was also going to publish Arabic manuscript by al-Wardi (15 century) which was kept in the Museum. Zavadovsky drew attention of Anna Tveretinova for cataloguing Turkish Manuscripts in Bakhchisaray. However, these plans were not implemented.
