The Mid-Atlantic Ottoman Studies Workshop 2019 focused on the interplay between knowledge and imperial governance in Ottoman history, featuring discussions on various topics such as the role of astrologers, morality in late Ottoman society, and interreligious dialogue. The program highlighted the impact of knowledge and critique on statecraft, the dynamics of border formation, and the social transformation of intellectuals within the empire. Key sessions included examinations of cultural politics, warfare, and the development of medical knowledge, contributing to a broader understanding of the Ottomans' historical significance.
Since man has a natural aptitude for comprehending past and future affairs, and perhaps also for unlocking the secrets of eternities past and future, humanity's spiritual need for this science [history] is evident.
Course Description: This course is a seminar exploration of the Ottoman Empire’s history and cultural legacies from its formation in the late 13th century until 1789 – with a strong concentration on the “classical age” of Ottoman rule. The course will concentrate on the historical evolution of the Ottoman Empire’s political, religious, cultural, and institutional aspects. There is no prerequisite for this course, although it is preferred that students have taken at least one Middle East History course prior to enrollment. This course also covers intellectual issues the face Ottomanists. We explore how Ottoman historians think about, analyze, and interpret the past; discuss the nature of our historical knowledge; and evaluate different theories that ground our view of that history. Finally, we examine the role of historiography in shaping Ottoman historians’ work.

There have been a number of publications and conferences recently which methodologically deal with the frontiers, encounters and interchange between different units within the Ottoman Empire throughout the long history of Ottoman times. 1 The present twovolume work is an end product of the 15 th Symposium of the Comité International d’Études Pré-Ottomanes et Ottomanes, held in London from 8 July to 12 July, 2002. It contains a selection of the presented papers: thirty three papers which seek to extend the frontiers of Ottoman studies either with new methodological approaches or by “reading” new historical sources and materials for the sake of Ottoman studies. These articles are arranged into four chapters per volume.
