Storia e Paleopatologia del Cancro: un racconto biologico

2019, Medical Live Magazine

Abstract

Cancer is often regarded as a modern disease. It is in fact most ancient and its antiquity can be demonstrated by applying the methodologies of the archaeological branch of medicine, palaeopathology. By studying ancient skeletal remains and mummies, this discipline manages to reconstruct the past and evolution of disease, including cancer. This article shows how oncological conditions were present long before the appearance of Homo sapiens sapiens and endeavours to explain the transition from historical periods in which cancer was a rare entity to the current epidemiology. Finally, the article highlights the status of research on the identification of breast cancer in ancient times.
