Abstract

Brazilian Law 11645 (2008) states in its first paragraph that in basic education establishments, the study of Afro-Brazilian and indigenous history and culture becomes mandatory. For this law to enter into practice, however, there are several obstacles, especially the structural racism of our society, which is manifested, for example, as religious racism, against religious manifestations of African influence, such as Umbanda and candomblé. Thus, little progress has been made since the enactment of this law to introduce African history and culture in school. To do so without taking into account the aspect of religiosity, so present in the African ancestral reality and such a striking impression of its people in our Brazilian culture would undoubtedly be an amputation, and accepting it means surrendering to the racist mechanism. Coping strategies should be thought of in all spheres of school reality. Above all, in the field of sciences, there is a distance from these questions, which is itself the result of a process of coloniality of thought, which accepts only Europe and its universalist concept of science. This work aims, therefore, to create tools to face these issues. For this, two videos were made as didactic material for teaching chemistry in an interdisciplinary perspective, exploring the Ogum orixá and its importance in the development of Umbanda and Candomblé, as well as its relations with the iron and steel smelting and smelting, and the impacts of this type of technology on the development of society and modern civilization. It also aims to bring to light African smiths as fundamental actors in the technological development of humanity, as holders of deep scientific and technological knowledge so that it is possible to walk towards an epistemologically less Eurocentric school.
