AI-generated Abstract
Alonso Cueto's novels, particularly "The Blue Hour" and "Grandes miradas", explore the complexities of Peruvian society during the tumultuous 1990s, intertwining personal narratives with the political landscape defined by the Fujimori regime. The novels not only depict the brutality of this period through various perspectives but also highlight themes of individual responsibility amidst systemic violence. By examining intertextual links and Cueto's role as a chronicler of Lima, the works reflect on the broader social fabric, providing a nuanced portrayal of the challenges faced by different social classes.

In their critical study of Lo prohibido most scholars make only casual mention of its memoir format, and the fictitious circumstances of its composition are all but ignored. yet this narrative premise has an overall impact on the novel. In addition to determining the discourse order of the text, it is instrumental in establishing the narrator\u27s authorial autonomy as well as permitting him varying degrees of unreliability. Furthermore, it affects the different narrative voice techniques employed in the novel. The following discussion will examine the implications of this neglected facet of Lo prohibido

The seventeenth century, anonymously published, Spanish novel, "The Life of Estebanillo Gonzales", is a text of immense literary value and a fascinating historical document. Using an approach that combines literary criticism and historical analysis, this paper examines the novel in relation to the concept of the Spanish Baroque. While using an alternative reading of the novel that sees in the topos of the Buffoon a mythic trope that functions as a continuous ironic double entendre throughout the text, this paper promotes the thesis that "The Life of Estevanillo Gonzales", through its use of grotesque imagery, inverted values, mockery and satire offers a glimpse into the deep crisis of seventeenth century Spain. As such the novel, should be read as a charged political product of its time, a work that reflects a break from tradition and the deterioration of the established order in the Spanish baroque, which in turn relates to larger historical shifts in contemporary Europe.
