Klar was the Officer in Charge of our Naval Security Group Detachment at Linkou Air Station on Taiwan. I am sharing this paper from Naval History. I am not a co-author. This is for historical purposes only. Klar recalls the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident that plunged the US into the Vietnam War. North Vietnamese troops attacked a US ship in the gulf, resulting in US retaliation and the beginning of the war.
This was originally written as a term paper for a course on the military and society at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1970. I should note that I telescoped the pre-induction physical (which took place in February 1961) with the actual date of induction on April 4, 1961. Over the years, I have added to the paper with a view to expanding it as some sort of memoir. Still a work in progress as I near age 80.

Nguyen Van Thieu achieved political dominance in Vietnam by engineering a series of coups, and espousing fanatical anti-communism to prolong the Cold War encouraged similar neighbouring corrupt authoritarianisms.
This paper was a research assignment for a graduate course called "American Foreign Relations." The purpose was to discuss a “specific historical challenge in US foreign relations that holds relevance for contemporary foreign policy.” This paper seeks to examine the lessons learned in the MACSOG Documentation and how the U.S. can apply these lessons to contemporary issues.
