Through an overview leaded on the Archive of the Events preserved in Fondazione Corrente, this article traces the Institution’s cultural choices following the point of view of the exhibitions’ history since 1978. It emerges a continuity between the proposal of shows dedicated to artists who were part of Corrente movement together with the desire to find in the youngest generation the fruits of those seeds of commitment in art sown before the war. At the center there is a focus on the topic of the image as an “icon”, a medium that gives the most effective and immediate communication between the sensitivity of the authors and that of the public

The article proposes a reflection on portraits realized by the artists who gravitated around “Corrente”, the periodical founded in January 1938 in Milan by Ernesto Treccani. In contrast to the official and celebratory practice prevalent at the time, the painters of the group (Renato Birolli, Bruno Cassinari, Renato Guttuso and many others) used the portrait as a privileged field of psychological and expressive research, looking for a new dialogue with the examples of international contemporary art. In addition to that, portraiture gave them the opportunity to create a new iconography of artist and man, which could embody a shared horizon of cultural, existential, and political values. Finally, portraiture assumed for the artists of «Corrente» a crucial identity function: it was a tool to emphasize the existence of a network of friends and thus affirm a cohesive collective identity.

After a short story of the journal «Corrente», founded in 1938 by Ernesto Treccani, the article remembers the role played in it by Vittorio Sereni, who studied at Milan's University with Antonio Banfi, and looks at his first poetry book, Frontiera, in which ermetic manner coexists with something that can be said realistic. Sereni took also part in 1978 in the establishment of, and participated in its initiatives

Varie esperienze scatenate dalle vicende storiche del momento, motivarono anche questo loro atteggiamento. Nel 1935 Graziella Romano -nata a Demonte (Cuneo) l'11 novembre 1906 -, mentre Mussolini inizia le operazioni militari contro l'Abissinia, si trasferiva a Torino insieme a suo marito. Avendo già ottenuto la laurea in lettere, incomincia a lavorare come insegnante di letteratura ed espone, in diverse mostre, le sue pitture, frutto delle lezioni di Felice Casorati. Fino alla sua prima pubblicazione nel '41 -la raccolta di versi "Fiore" -si era dedicata, figlia di una famiglia della media borghesia, alla formazione professionale e familiare. Partecipava, inoltre, alle attività caratteristiche dell'ambiente culturale laico progressista di Torino, dove realizzò i suoi studi universitari, e visse l'esaltazione della letteratura francese.

Nell'ambito della rassegna Arte Contemporanea Lavori in corso sono stati organizzati numerosi incontri con gli artisti svolti inizialmente presso il padiglione espositivo di Via Cagliari e, dal settembre 1999, presso la Sala Conferenze del complesso di Via Reggio Emilia. Le iniziative hanno avuto ampio successo di pubblico e hanno costituito stimolanti occasioni per dibattiti e testimonianze sull'arte contemporanea a Roma.
