AI-generated Abstract
The paper examines Max Aub's 'San Juan', focusing on how the literary text reflects diverse constructions of belonging beyond the author's biography. It highlights Aub's multifaceted cultural and political life, tracing his identity as a Spanish writer of Jewish descent. The implications of memory and collective responsibility are explored, particularly in relation to historical atrocities and the role of literature as both a chronicle and an accusation against societal injustices.

Censura y literatura. Memorias contestadas. Mari Jose Olaziregi y Lourdes Otaegi (eds.). Berlin: Peter Lang. Col. Estudios Hispánicos en el Contexto Global, vol. 10., 2020
Around the Spanish Civil War and its consequences (concentration camps, exile), Max Aub wrote six novels and numerous stories that make up El laberinto mágico. This narrative fresco is an unparalleled memorialist project that combines reality and fiction, becoming the paradigm of contemporary historical fiction. Written over three decades in Mexico, its reception in Spain was delayed and unequal due, on the one hand, to the silencing of exile by the Francoist dictatorship, and on the other to the epochal censorship, which denied its import several times or edition. By virtue of the records of censorship preserved, this work shows, then, the reunion of Aub with Spanish readers, but also of censorship mechanisms that altered his last will, such as the self-imposed censorship of the labyrinthine texts, which the writer had to accept as a condition to see the light in Spain.
