The practice of medicine was an essential feature of medieval Islamic culture. The medicine of pre-Islamic Arabia was initially based on tradition or folk medicine of various Bedouin communities. Upon the emergence of Islam in the mid-seventh century, however, pre-Islamic medicinal practices became combined with the recommendations of the Prophet Muhammad, forming an influential field of medicine and healthcare known as Prophetic Medicine. The treatises and manuscripts of Prophetic medicine encouraged the use of natural remedies, good diet and rituals for the curing of diseases and promotion of good health. Administered by religious physicians and scholars, the practice included recommendations for all aspects of healthcare and lifestyle, ranging from everyday ailments, female health, fertility and child rearing. Flourishing alongside the classical medical traditions of Galen and Hippocrates which advanced throughout the Islamic Golden Age (seventh-thirteenth centuries), the practices of Prophetic medicine had a significant influence on the history of medicine.

This study aimed to examine the prophetic tradition in modern healing, and to obtain a comprehensive overview on the discourse from the divine revelation and sunnah, although they are basically sources of Islamic law, which covered to a large extent all aspects of man’s mundane affairs, most of which have been demonstrated in the sayings, actions and judgements of the prophet (peace be upon him). The Islamic religion, as a guide to man in all aspects of life ramifications, has a serious concern with the general principle of medicine be it personal hygiene or public health. The Qur’anic verses on this topic are numerous, where medicine is also discussed and practiced, and there are many sayings of the prophet, (peace be upon him), that deal with health, disease, hygiene and other issues in the field of medicine. Diseases such as leprosy, pleura and eye surgery have been mentioned. Likewise, it suggests treatments such as cupping, honey and home remedies. These group of hadith in medi...

Prophetic medicine describes various methods of treatment and prevention of diseases recommended by the Prophet SAW. The Prophet was seen suggesting the use of certain natural ingredients such as honey, tamar and al-habbah al-sauda' to the his companions as a solution to their health problems. Recently, this aspect of holiness that accompanies the Prophet's words has been exploited by some parties with the aim of promoting their products that contain the ingredients mentioned in the hadith. Some traders who sell these ingredients directly are also seen not to be left behind in publicizing the business with the same modus operandi. Not only that, some of the generality of the hadith phrases of the Prophet (SAW) are also used arbitrarily to gain the interest of the buyers without taking the understanding of Islamic scholars and modern medical experts as a backup in interacting with the relevant hadiths. The objective of this article is to highlight the principles of prophetic medicine as espoused by Mahmud Nazhim al-Nasimi in his work "Al-Tibb al-Nabawi wa al-'Ilm al-Hadith". The analysis is done based on deductive approach and comparison of the principles he has proposed with the comments of Islamic scholars in the works of hadith compilations. The results of the study found that the principles of prophetic medicine stated by al-Nasimi such as the incorporation of elements of revelation and ijtihad in prophetic medicine were found to be in line with the ideas that had been stated by some early Islamic scholars.

At the present time, attention to traditional, protective, complementary and natural applications of medicine is on the rise. Religious medical therapies is a special case of curiosity. For Muslims, Prophetic Medicine (al-Ṭibb al-Nabawi) and Islamic Medicine, are gaining popularity as a reflection of love to their Prophet, Mohamed, and Sunnah (his traditions) perception. Al-Tıb al-Nabaw refers to the curative treatments and preventive medicine reported in the Prophetic guidance and practice. After the demise of the Prophet and the rise of Islam, a vast literature had been written in these fields. Some confusions are arising and questions being asked: is Prophetic Medicine and Islamic Medicine the same thing? What is this new term "Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine"? How those practices, if distinct, are interconnected to each other? And how related to alternative and complementary medicine? The issue of how to understand the Prophetic medicine has become a subject of interest for Muslims vis-à-vis to others in fields of modern medical sciences. This exploration is an initiative to critically review, analyze and construct, within contemporary understanding and practices, the existing formulations and definitions of Prophetic and Islamic Medicine, to propose answers to those arising questions.

ABSTRACT Prophetic Medicine is a series of authentic medical intentions and healing methods mentioned by Prophet (peace be upon him). Furthermore, those are recommendations relevant to human health in the condition of life and those are certain, accurate and godly medicines and it is carrying a key role in Islamic history. The all indications and guidance of Prophet (peace be upon him) by Hadiths relating to the medicines, consist plenty curative properties and those have been applied by mass communities for centuries but gradually, the followers of this medicine put a glance of negligence before it by the emergence of modern medicine and they become imitators of it and although there have a number of researches and books enhanced by scholars referring to the treatments guaranteed by Prophet(peace be upon him),the post-modern people forgot its relevance and recent researches on Prophetic medicine proved scientifically as beneficial to several ailments and diseases even newly invented. Therefore, I prefer to study deeply on Prophetic medicine and eagerly desiring to fetch its significance in modern era.
" The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air. " Prophet Muhammed PBUH.

At the present time, it is obvious that the attention to alternative, protective and complementary applications of medicine has increased and in this sense there is a special curiosity to the case, Prophetic Medicine “al-Tibb al-Nabawī”.
