This article outlines key principles of the Gitananda Yoga tradition, emphasizing its comprehensive and transformative approach to yoga beyond physical postures. It highlights the philosophy of living yoga as a continuous way of life, the aim of nurturing self-capable individuals instead of followers, and the unique teachings surrounding concepts like Yantra and Mudra integral to the practice. The teachings advocate for a personal journey towards liberation, encouraging individuals to recognize their inherent divine nature and the ultimate goal of Moksha.

214 Swamiji’s Distinctive Perspective on Yoga mong Swamiji’s many contributions to global spirituality, some of the most important, and also the least understood, are his contributions to the discourse of yoga: that is, to the understanding of what, precisely, yoga is, its aim and purpose, and the methods that it involves. There are, of course, many interpretations of yoga, as well as many types of yoga. Indeed, the same thing can be said of yoga that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi once said of religion: ‘In reality, there are as many religions as there are individuals.’1 Similarly, there are as many yogas as there are individuals. The intent of this essay is not to claim that Swamiji’s approach to the nature of yoga is the only correct approach; nor, in claiming that his approach is distinctive; the intent is to state that this approach is entirely unique, and that important aspects of it are not also shared by other major thinkers on yoga. In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, prominent Indian religious leaders such as Swami Vivekananda and Swami Sivananda developed systems of yoga based on Patañjali's Aṣṭāṅgayoga and called them Rājayoga. They have promoted the Yogasūtra as the most authoritative source on Rājayoga. In contrast to this, there are modern Indian systems of Rājayoga which have very little to do with Pātañjalayoga, such as the one taught globally by the Brahma Kumaris. It is generally accepted that Rājayoga refers to types of yoga which are based more on meditation than physical techniques such as postures (āsana), yet very little research has been done to explain why there are variations between modern systems of Rājayoga. Also, the term rājayoga (literally, ‘king-yoga’) implies superiority, usually, over Haṭhayoga, but this raises the question of whether there was ever a justifiable basis for this claim of superiority, which I address here through examining the history of Rājayoga.
